Genocide requires more than our sympathy -we must bear witness...

We must do more than be sorry, we must bear witness to the horrors of what is happening in the Ukraine. In a word it is genocide. During the insanity of war, an unknown pregnant woman and her baby were killed as massive bombing destroyed the maternity ward where she and other expectant mothers were being treated. They join thousands who have died, millions who have been displaced in what can only be called the egomaniacal desires of an autocrat. As a paranoid dictator, Vladimir Putin joins not only his predecessor Stalin but a list of others such as Hitler, Idi Amin, Papa Doc, and Ferdinand Marcos. Much like other dictators, he seems mindless of what will happen after he has left the scene.?Putin frankly could give a damn, as he follows the script laid down by dictators who came before.?One such example comes from 1757 as King Louis XV of France dismisses the stunning defeat in the battle of Rossbach. According to one account, Madame de Pompadour, equally unphased declare après nous le deluge or “after us, the deluge”.?(Lexico 2022) Such dismals is standard fair for failure among autocrats and dictators.?Similarly, Putin exhibits a nihilistic indifference to the consequences of his actions.?The reality is that this insane war was premeditated, conspicuous, deliberately conceived and executed by Vladimir Putin. The reality is that Vladimir Putin is waging this war, has been planning this war, and has no intentions of ending this war until Ukraine no longer exists and its people have been annihilated. ?And this will serve no political, economic, or sane reason to anyone, save the inflation of Putin’s ego.

Putin is merely following a script written hundred years ago as innocents were racialized and targeted, victimized, brutalized, and annihilated. In this chapter we shall investigate this script, examine the intellectual and very real consequences of following it across time, nation, and circumstances.?What we will discover is that regardless of political, national, or historical era the script has been the same.
