Reflecting on his early experiences, Wu shared, "I had done math contests from a young age (including a US middle school math contest called MATHCOUNTS) and I really enjoyed those. Later on, my brother Neal started doing USACO, and he introduced me to programming contests."


The rise of a Codeforces Legendary Grandmaster

Transitioning from mathematics to programming, Wu was introduced to the competitive programming arena by his brother Neal at the age of 14. He quickly developed a penchant for this blend of creative problem-solving and technical prowess, excelling in programming contests and ascending to legendary grandmaster status on Codeforces, a platform that epitomizes the pinnacle of competitive programming challenges.

Wu's passion for competitive programming was evident from the start, as he recounted, "I was pretty much hooked as soon as I started competing. Overall I find programming contests to be a really fun mix of innovation (coming up with new algorithms or discrete math) and engineering (coding/debugging skill, practical understanding of systems/compilers, code optimization). I also really enjoy the strategy component of programming contests, which is very unique compared to e.g. math or physics olympiads."


A Treasure Trove of Achievements

Wu's accolades in this domain are as impressive as they are numerous, with gold medals and top ranks at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) solidifying his reputation as a programming legend. His competitive spirit and intellectual dexterity saw him excel across a variety of contests, from the TopCoder Open Algorithm to the Google Code Jam and the Facebook Hacker Cup, amassing a treasure trove of medals, honors, and recognition that few can rival.

It sounds silly that solving algorithmic puzzles ends up being similar to solving real-world business problems (and they are very different problems), but a lot of the underlying skills carry over well, such as iterating quickly on code, familiarity with data/statistics, and being able to adapt and learn in response to new problems."

In 2017, he co-founded Lunchclub, a platform designed to facilitate professional connections using data and machine learning. Throughout his time at Lunchclub, Wu and his team tackled various challenges, including finding product-market fit, growth hacking, scaling quality, and adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic.


Founding Cognition AI: A New Era

After taking a brief hiatus from competitive programming in 2016-17, Wu returned with renewed focus, discovering that his continued engagement in contests actually enhanced his overall productivity. This realization would prove invaluable as he embarked on his next venture, co-founding Cognition AI in 2023.
