6 年This is an important breakthrough!?
Founder and Director @ First Garden City Consulting | Chemicals and Algae/Nutraceutical Industries
6 年I am baffled by the decision to plant these crops - especially seeing from the comments that the article is wrong - the crops are Genetically modified - not GE. Why?? So the UK is now taking all the risks of planting a GMO crop, using arable land and fresh water - despite the fact that Mother Nature gave us a much more productive source that uses marginal land and brackish water. Micro-algae and in particular Nannochloropsis. Furthermore it delivers the omega-3 in a highly bioavailable form (polar lipids) proven in clinical trials to outperform Krill Oil let alone triglycerides like those produced in the is plant I am certain. The strain I mentioned produces mostly EPA omega-3 which is the key omega-3 for adults and is proven at commercial scale (>100 acres). The other important omega 3 (DHA) is also produced from algae (albeit via fermentation) and finds itself in essentially 100% of global baby formula. So why risk planting a low productivity GMO crop giving an inferior product? I am stunned

6 年Thanks for highlighting my omega-3 programme at Rothamsted and our commitment?to?GM field trials in the UK. I enjoyed your article but I need to correct one point - our Camelina lines making omega-3 fish oils are GM, not genome edited. To generate the omega-3 fish oils trait, you need to add multiple new genes, whereas genome editing is used to remove DNA. So it would not be possible to edit plants to make omega-3 fish oils. We are field-trialling some genome-edited camelina lines generated by our colleagues in INRA Versatile, but these are for a different trait (high oleic acid).
