?? June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month ?? It's a perfect time to shine a light on the importance of brain health and raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. These conditions are not just personal battles; they are significant public health concerns.? ? Did you know that Alzheimer's disease is the only leading cause of death that cannot be prevented, cured, or slowed? It's a sobering fact, but one that we must confront head-on. Furthermore, based on data from our database, there are approximately 1.8M long term care residents living with Alzheimer's disease or some form of dementia over the age of 65, an average age of onset at age 83.? None of us are immune, as anyone with a brain is at risk of developing this devastating disease. Let's use this month as an opportunity to start conversations about the brain and its vulnerabilities. Together, we can educate ourselves and others about the risks, warning signs, and available support for those affected by Alzheimer's and related dementias.? ? ?? Join us in raising awareness and support for Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month. Together, we can make a difference! ?? ??? “Although there are some promising initial biomedical treatments for dementia, there is currently no miracle cure. Therefore it’s critical we act on improving the protective factors – such as #wellbeing – that show promise for reducing the risk of developing this devastating disease.” More than a decade of interdisciplinary research demonstrates a clear and robust link between higher levels of well-being earlier in life and a reduced risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia. To mark the beginning of Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, we’re shining a light on some hugely impactful work first published in World Happiness Report 2024. Chief Communications Officer, STEM NOLA | STEM Global Action ? Board Chair, Alzheimer's Association Louisiana Chapter [21.5K+ micro-influencers]
In a recent 60 MINUTES report by Will Croxton, correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi explored a groundbreaking approach to treating Alzheimer's disease led by Dr. Ali Rezai. Dr. Rezai and his team conducted clinical trials utilizing ultrasound technology, commonly used for tracking fetal development, to efficiently deliver therapeutics to the brains of Alzheimer's patients. Astonishingly, the results revealed a 50% reduction in beta-amyloid plaque—a protein linked to cognitive impairment—compared to other parts of the brain treated with infusion alone. Dr. Rezai highlighted the significance of beta-amyloid plaques in Alzheimer's development, emphasizing their rapid accumulation in the brains of affected individuals. The disruption caused by these protein clumps hampers communication between brain cells, leading to memory and thinking problems. Despite ongoing research, Dr. Rezai mentioned the potential of blood testing as a screening tool for identifying Alzheimer's risk. Although currently limited to early Alzheimer's cases, he envisioned a future where individuals with a family history could proactively test their blood. The report also touched on positive lifestyle changes, including the benefits of a Mediterranean diet, adequate sleep, stress reduction, and exercise in improving overall brain health and potentially reducing Alzheimer's risk. Dr. Rezai encouraged simple yet impactful actions like engaging with family and friends, adopting new hobbies, and managing factors like weight, diabetes, and hypertension to promote brain recovery. #Alzheimers #MedicalInnovation #BrainHealth #endalz https://lnkd.in/guKAfpwj

It's Day 12 of Brain and Alzheimer's Awareness Month! All this month, I will post a quick and simple mini-challenge to give your brain a QUICK WIN! Today's challenge will leave you COLD…and that’s a?good?thing! Would you be surprised to learn that a cold water dunk provides brain benefits? It’s true! This is a concept called?hormesis?(hore-ME-sis), where a brief stress on the body results in a response that provides an overall benefit. Think, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” There are several ways to activate hormesis, and in the case of cold water exposure, we get the added benefit of reduced inflammation. The hardest part is just committing to doing it! The biggest benefit comes from whole-body immersion in cold water, but that can be tricky to do without an official cold plunge tub, and that can be a big commitment to purchase and maintain…this is meant to be a?quick?win for today! Instead, you can get?some?benefit by simply using what you have - a shower or tub. Today, I challenge you to turn that shower knob to?Brrrrrrr?and try your very best to relax for at least 30 seconds, up to 3 minutes (it actually gets easier the longer you stay in!). Try not to overthink it…you can do it!?
