Generosity
For the past few weeks I've been spearheading an initiative for midstream oil & gas pipeline operators in North America. The initiative has undergone extensive development, especially as we draw ever closer to the launch phase. In due time I can't wait to tell you all about it. Definitely watch this space.
As with almost any creative endeavour, collaboration has been key. I've appreciated how many senior level executives across North America have given me their time and expertise so that we can create something of real value - a genuine contribution to the industry. It being Christmas, it has got me thinking about how generosity in business and the pooling of expertise so often illuminates the way forward.
It just goes to show how important it is to communicate effectively about why you're initiating a conversation. How often do we get approached on LinkedIn or via phone by people looking to exploit our connections or sell us something we don't need? This can so often lead to cynicism and the barriers going up, which makes us all poorer
We all have a responsibility to make sure that when we make an approach, we do so in good faith. Successful collaborations rest on the generosity of all involved. It's not about what's in it for you and what's in it for them - the question is "What's in it for us?"
Now that's something to think about beyond the Christmas season.
I'd be interested to hear your stories from the past year about how generosity has bred success in your own endeavours. Do comment!
