Around the world, it's customary to give gifts during this time of year. We observe Christmas, Hanukkah, the Chinese New Year, and other festivities. But why is giving gifts such a big part of these celebrations?

Abbott, a manufacturer of medical equipment, conducted a global survey of thousands of people to find out what brings them the most happiness and fulfillment.

Giving was consistently among the top three responses. This finding is important because it suggests that generosity may be ingrained in our DNA. Giving to others allows us to experience true mental and physical advantages. I suppose that the saying "give and you shall get" is true.

There are many reasons people might give their time, money, or possessions. Whatever the motivation, giving benefits both the giver and the recipient.
