The Generosity Checkmate of Giving Without a Price Tag

Why in a world obsessed with taking, the greatest power lies in giving matters.
“Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more,” — H. Jackson Brown Jr.
I often ask myself if generosity is the currency of true wealth.
Is it?
As a child, I fondly remember the busy pathways of a quaint city park. It was here that young and old would play chess. My mum and I would pass there often on the way back from the local market, you see.
And there was this old man, a chess enthusiast. You know the type, grey hair with a tweed hat and pipe. To me, he was an unwitting philosopher.
When Mum and I had extra time, I was able to sit and watch the chess matches. And, it is only now that I realize that this old fella taught me more than just game strategies.
There’s something about him, isn’t there, I am saying to myself. Was it his grin or thus billowing train-like puffs from his pipe?
No, it was the way he gave his time, his knowledge of rooks and pawns, without ever asking for a penny in return.
It’s like he’s tapped into some secret source of joy, each time he shares a tactic or move.
I’m rambling, however, did you know that studies have shown that acts of generosity activate regions in the brain associated with pleasure, social connection, and trust?
Astonishing, right?
It turns out, giving not only feels good but can actually boost our mental and physical health. So, there’s science behind the joy we see in the old chess master’s eyes!
So here I am, writing about this, and I can’t help but think: in our world of hashtags and hyperlinks, where every like, share, and comment is counted, measured, and monetized, have we forgotten the value of giving without a price tag?
The Digital Era Where Generosity Speaks Louder Than Clicks
In the currency of the digital marketplace, the idea of generosity is being redefined.
No longer strictly aligned with the traditional definitions of charity and selflessness, creativity and knowledge itself are becoming the most valuable assets that digital creators can share. As such, it is both how loud and how far waves of generosity can spread that define their impact.
In the great expanse of the internet, how far exactly can your wave of generosity reach?
Consider our stories here on Medium. A creative insight, words of advice, or words of encouragement are shared, they aren’t spent for a single moment.
No — each of those acts of shared knowledge, kindness, and support is more like the germ of life from which a web of verdant, richly-connected community grows. Every act becomes an infinity of possibility that grows stakes deeper into the value-nourishing and giving soil of an empathetic, interconnected, online world.
In an era where most interactions are digital, acts of digital kindness become the fiber that knits an empathetic online world. They are making the personal, the anonymous — redefining our digital footprint from an insecure, completely impersonal spatter of dissolving ink into though-felt, actionable lines that can form a path for another foot to step upon.
Prioritizing these acts in human interactions ensures that what technology boils down to is transformative, just as is creativity, originality, and knowledge. Think about it. More than just the essentials; more than simple acts of common decency; these acts are what make the experience — the journey! — deeper and fuller and richer for all.
What I’d like us to consider is that our digital worth isn’t just measured by analytics or algorithms. It is defined by the connective tissue of our relationships — the fabric, density, and depth that prefaces and is bolstered by every click; it is generosity, louder than the clicks.
With every post, tweet, and pin, new digital dreams are woven — one inspired utterance at a time.
How Can We Be Generous Digital Creators?
In the spirit of our chess-playing sage in the park, how can we mirror his generosity in the digital world?
I’m suggesting these as moves on the board of digital generosity, helping us all make a lasting impact:
1. Be Generous with Knowledge
Just like our chess master shares his strategic prowess, share your expertise freely in your online community.
Offer insights, advice, and guidance without expecting anything in return. It’s like planting a seed of knowledge and watching a forest of wisdom grow.

By doing so, you’re not just contributing; you’re inspiring a culture of learning and growth.
2. Network with Heart
The chess games in the park aren’t just about winning; they’re about connecting.
Similarly, use your digital network to connect people, introduce talents, and create opportunities for others. It’s about building bridges between souls, not just contacts in a digital database.
This approach transforms networking from a self-serving activity into a communal, enriching experience.
3. Give Feedback Lovingly
Our chess mentor doesn’t just criticize a bad move; he guides towards a better one.
When giving feedback online, be constructive, not critical. Frame your words to uplift and guide, turning them into ladders that help others climb to greater heights.
This turns the often-dreaded experience of receiving feedback into a positive, growth-oriented interaction.
4. Practise The Art of Sharing
In the park, onlookers gather around to watch and learn from the games.
Emulate this by sharing other creators’ work online. Celebrate their successes, and contribute to a culture of mutual support and admiration.
This not only bolsters community spirit but also fosters a network where everyone benefits from shared visibility and success.
5. Volunteer Your Skills
I’m sure the old man could have easily monetized his chess expertise, but he chose to gift it instead.
Maybe you could consider to offer your skills to causes or individuals who might benefit from them online. Whether it’s designing for a nonprofit, writing for a cause you believe in, or offering free webinars, your talents can make a significant difference.
This approach to volunteering brings the ethos of the chess games in the park to the digital world, strengthening the community fabric.
Really, we all have the opportunity to leave a lasting, positive impact on those we interact with online. Please try to turn each of your digital interactions into a move that enriches, educates, and uplifts.
Should We Be More Generous? The Choice is Yours.
For me, I’ve decided.
In this digital era, I’ve learned just how priceless the act of sharing, connecting, and lifting one another up without expecting anything in return can be.
More so, I’ve learned to see how it extends beyond the virtual world, to impact very real moments and very real lives.
It’s about so much more than just creating content or adding connections; it’s about standing quietly next to the chess master in the park, taking in the lessons and, through them, weaving a tapestry of kindness, and a network of giveback.
That is the greatest lesson I’ve learned from them all. Isn’t it time we create so much magic that it touches the tangible world? As content creators, our acts of generosity can spark a chain reaction of inspiration and community spirit, far beyond what we can imagine.
Final Thoughts
In the endgame to our digital game of chess, the grandmaster in the park whispers his final sage move: In the end, it is not the analytics, nor the applause that defines success.
Throughout the journey, it has always been about sowing the seeds that in turn grow and flourish. The moments of caring, the generation of smiles, the heartfelt embrace, and the forging of our connection. All those other things were never really our measure of success.
In a world where you can be anything…be the one who bestows the most gifts, refraining from keeping score.
When we subtract all the likes, selfies, and meme videos from the cacophony of digital noise, another result emerges. Our surviving and lasting legacy is not the headcount of our followers. It is the final count in the ‘lives we touch’ ledger.
So, let’s twirl and whirl these digital masks as we throw our metaphorical chess pieces of kindness high into the air, and, in this grand gesture, proclaim — CHECKMATE!
