In an era where the "half-life" of skills is less than five years—and in some tech sectors, a mere two and a half years—the question of professional relevance has never been more pressing (Harvard Business Review, 2023). New UK research from pension provider Aegon amplifies this concern, revealing that only 15% of workers aged 50-59 feel their skills are becoming obsolete. However, a staggering 54% of those in their 50s who have stopped work or entered retirement feel the same (HR Magazine, 2023).
The Silver Lining in Silverization
The term "Silverization" is gaining traction to describe the burgeoning demographic of older individuals. While society has often viewed this demographic shift as a burden, it's time to reframe the narrative. Older workers are not liabilities; they are invaluable assets with a wealth of experience and wisdom.
The Employer's Imperative
Employers must recognize the urgency of this issue. Tom Lakin, global director at HR consultancy Resource Solution, suggests that employers need to work harder to retain people over 50 and keep them in the workforce. He emphasizes that the age-related differences in workplace and career priorities need to be understood by both HR and talent acquisition leaders (HR Magazine, 2023). As the workforce undergoes Silverization, it's imperative for organizations to invest in reskilling programs that are inclusive of all age groups. This is not just a matter of social responsibility; it's a strategic imperative. A diverse workforce that spans multiple generations can offer a rich tapestry of skills, perspectives, and experiences (Harvard Business Review, 2019).
Generative AI: The Bridge Between Generations
Generative AI models like GPT-4 offer a promising solution. These advanced AI systems can provide personalized training modules that adapt to the learning pace and style of each individual. This makes the reskilling process more efficient and less intimidating for older workers, who may be less familiar with digital technologies (UNESCO, n.d.).
Two-Way Learning: The Symbiosis of Wisdom and Skill
But the potential of generative AI extends beyond reskilling. It can also facilitate a two-way learning environment. AI-powered platforms can be developed where older employees can upload their insights and experiences, creating a knowledge base that can be accessed by younger employees. This promotes a culture of shared learning, where skills and wisdom are mutually exchanged, turning the challenge of Silverization into an opportunity for organizational growth.

The Individual's Responsibility
For older workers, embracing the concept of Silverization means acknowledging the need for continuous learning. Jackie Handy, an inclusive leadership specialist, suggests that the desire to train and upskill is linked to the overall value an employee believes they have within an organization. She advises that organizations should highlight how such investment helps employees move from good to great, rather than from bad to good (HR Magazine, 2023).
Conclusion
Silverization is not a challenge to be feared but an opportunity to be seized. By leveraging the capabilities of generative AI, we can bridge the gap between generations, turning the aging workforce from a perceived burden into an invaluable asset. This not only helps older workers regain their professional confidence but also enriches the workforce as a whole. Want to read more about Silverization? 1 年Cecilia MoSze Tham and Sudha Jamthe I would love to chat with you both. We are about to launch the first A.I. enabled Green Skills Accelerator for pre-millennials ( ages 43-68) as a Step One in n emerging skills Academy for this silver group. Upon completion we not only have job opportunities but also an inter-generational bridge community with the younger ones Gen Z and below using emerging technologies as the common vocabulary that binds them. Neeha M.. It is this silver generation that has the human/soft skills needed in these emerging areas that are blindspots for the younger generations. They just don't have the vocabulary common and context YET... but we will do something about that ;-)
