Generative AI: Replace or Collaborate
Indeed, while generative AI has the potential to reduce costs through automation, it's important to strike a balance and not to be obsessed on automation. The disappearance of valuable human expertise can be a side effect. Experts in AI suggest that the key is for workers to learn how to collaborate with AI rather than be replaced by it.
A recent research illustrates the benefits of this collaboration. In a customer service centre, the introduction of gen AI resulted in a 15% increase in overall employee productivity. Early-career workers experienced a significant boost in productivity, with a remarkable 35% increase. This demonstrates that when harnessed correctly, AI can enhance human performance rather than replace it.
The workplace is undoubtedly evolving, and many executives anticipate that AI's cognitive capabilities could rival those of humans in the coming years. This has led to discussions about how organizations can generate value with fewer workers, especially as talent shortages persist.
However, it's crucial for leaders to avoid a myopic focus on immediate gains. Envisioning a future with fewer workers might overlook the bigger picture, which is the need to reimagine entire aspects of the business. Instead of simply reducing the workforce, leaders should contemplate how the workforce will evolve in conjunction with AI. They should explore what new skills workers will need to acquire and adapt to the changing landscape, fostering a more sustainable and innovative workforce.
