Generative AI: Friend or Foe??
Generative AI has certainly taken the world by storm in recent months.?
Enabling machines to autonomously produce data resembling human-like outputs, it employs complex algorithms, often based on deep learning techniques, to learn patterns from vast datasets to generate new content. It can be deployed in various fields including healthcare, art, music, and manufacturing and although it can bring many advancements to these fields, generative AI also raises ethical concerns, as it can be used for malicious purposes like creating deepfakes or generating misinformation.?
In fact, at this very moment (July 2023) actors and writers are uniting across the world to strike over concerns about fair pay and the use of artificial intelligence in the industry. Many members of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) believe that the use of AI and generative AI will harm the future of Hollywood and are calling for better regulations on the industry’s use of artificial intelligence.?
As well as introducing regulations and ethical standards, responsible development and usage by developers and end users alike are also essential to harnessing the potential of generative AI, but many fear we are still a long way off…?
Dive into this month’s newsletter for a closer look at some of the companies using generative AI for good as well as some of the risks associated with it.

Conclusion
It’s fair to say that generative AI can offer creative potential in art, writing, and other fields by enhancing productivity and innovation. However, the risks of misuse, such as deepfakes, misinformation, and copyright infringement, are very much in the spotlight at the moment. For many industries, ensuring ethical standards and responsible development to mitigate this potential harm will remain a key concern for many years to come.
