Generative AI: Driving Innovation in Manufacturing

In the year 2024, AI has become the keyword that defines an era.

With ChatGPT at the forefront, advanced AI technology stands at the center of innovation, providing practical assistance to numerous people and countless businesses. Last January, HL Mando entered a strategic technology partnership with Amazon Web Service (AWS) at CES2024, and we are developing a cloud relay solution in collaboration with AWS for the automobile manufacturing R&D field. In addition, HL Mando is continuously advancing automobile engineering technology through the partnership on generative AI, leading innovation in the manufacturing industry.

At the AWS Industry Week event held on November 7th, Senior Research Engineer Nam Jangwoo from HL Mando gave a presentation on examples of the innovations HL Mando has brought to the manufacturing industry. We met with Nam and asked him to share the story of the innovative changes in the manufacturing industry led by generative AI.

Q1) Could you tell us briefly about the AWS Industry Week event?

AWS Industry Week is an event where people introduce the latest trends in major industries as well as new insights for businesses and share examples of innovations from adopting the solutions provided by AWS from different fields and various strategies regarding cloud service. With the advent of generative AI, the AI competence and cloud strategy of a business have become prerequisites to facing a shift towards a new era. The event was attended by over three thousand visitors, reflecting the interest and enthusiasm regarding this topic.

Q2) You gave a presentation with the theme “Changes in Manufacturing Innovations Led by Generative AI.” What made you choose this agenda? What did you want to tell the visitors with your speech?

Generative AI represented by ChatGPT has already become deeply integrated into our jobs. This, of course, comes with adverse effects. Hallucinations, where generative AI offers unrelated or wrong responses to our prompt, and security concerns are the most common problems many companies meet utilizing generative AI. Under these circumstances, I wanted to share with the visitors how HL Mando is efficiently and safely using generative AI, and most of all, I wanted to let others know how good technologies we possess.

Q3) What motivates HL Mando to adopt generative AI in the workplace?

The automobile industry is swiftly shifting from a HW-centered industry to a SW-centered industry. Contrary to the limits on what humans can do, there is no limit to the demands of OEMs and vehicle types we have to meet, not to mention the increasing amount of tasks and resources required to do so. By utilizing generative AI, we aim to identify where we could increase our efficiency, use the AI, and actually increase the efficiency so that we could actively respond to market demands.

Q4) How is HL Mando utilizing the AI?

We are putting a lot of thought into using the AI at work for R&D, production, quality control, and other aspects. Especially at our SW Campus where I work, we are dedicated to devising a way to increase the work efficiency of our engineers by utilizing the AI in the field of automobile SW engineering.

Q5) How big a help is generative AI to people using them at work? Tell us what your colleagues are saying about the AI.

In terms of data analysis tasks, the engineers evaluate that using generative AI significantly decreased the resources required for analyses. The AI also reduced inconsistency in data classification caused by humans handling the data, which received positive feedback from the engineers. We are continuously monitoring what our employees are saying about the AI so that we can identify where else generative AI could be used in our company and further demonstrate its value in the workplace.

Q6) What is HL Mando’s ultimate goal in adopting generative AI?

Even after we move far into the era of generative AI, it will be us humans that begin and finish tasks. Generative AI should be considered a handy tool for humans to work more efficiently. This begs the question, “How can we best utilize the AI at work?” To answer this, we are currently focusing on our first goal of having our engineers use generative AI proficiently at work. As the AI settles into the work environment, we will begin our brave step towards reaching our ultimate goal of creating a smart and innovative manufacturing environment where we can enhance work efficiency, product quality, and professional competence.
