Generative AI is venturing into the realm of 3D modeling, and the results are astonishing. NVIDIA has joined forces with Masterpiece Studio to unveil an innovative AI platform capable of turning textual descriptions into 3D models. For those of us who have dabbled in the 3D industry, particularly in virtual archaeology, we understand all too well the extensive time commitments required for asset modeling, texturing, and animation.
As TurboSquid polishes its generative AI capabilities for 3D modelers, chip giant NVIDIA has struck a partnership with 3D software powerhouse Masterpiece Studio. Together, they've rolled out "Masterpiece X", a next-level platform that builds on existing text-to-2D technologies but aims to make an even bigger splash. Watch this space!
Masterpiece X seeks to democratize 3D artistry by marrying NVIDIA's state-of-the-art GPU inference technology with Masterpiece Studio's cutting-edge AI algorithms. The platform empowers users to conjure up 3D models using nothing more than a written description—no specialized technical skills needed.
The platform offers an agile sandbox for users to iterate and experiment, produce cost-efficient prototypes, and tailor them to their unique preferences. What’s more, Masterpiece X is fully compatible with popular 3D software suites like Blender, Unity, and Unreal Engine. Another feather in its cap is its burgeoning community of open-source enthusiasts, sharing 3D resources and fostering a culture of innovation in 3D tool development.
Though Masterpiece is hardly the first to explore generating 3D assets from text—Latent Labs on Discord comes to mind—Masterpiece X stands as a monumental leap forward in this burgeoning field.
A case in point: an entire Unreal Engine environment built exclusively with Masterpiece X-developed elements. Notably, any assets shared in the community library come under a Creative Commons Public Domain license, making them freely available for download, use, and modification.
We Put It to the Test
We decided to take Masterpiece X for a spin. After registering, we received 200 complimentary credits, with each generated model costing us 50 credits. Our initial request, made in Spanish, was for a "Roman Legionary in full battle gear, complete with an animatable skeleton and in mid-action." The first output, if we're being frank, was more on the eerie side.
After a few prompt adjustments, the results improved significantly. For the model, we stuck with a straightforward description: "ancient Viking ax," and for the texturing, we specified, "Standing position. Paint should resemble decorative silver with filigree Viking symbols."

We also had a hit with more basic descriptions, like requesting a "rustic hammer." Alongside the model, we showcase its polygon count, proving that while it's not perfect, it's certainly adequate.
Without a doubt, Masterpiece X marks a considerable leap forward in crafting complementary digital objects. It comes highly recommended for those passionate about game development and the VFX industry.
