What do 2024 and the 1976 Omega Seamaster Chrono-Quartz have in common? Surprisingly, a lot.
In 1976, Omega reimagined their flagship chronograph for the Montreal Olympic Games, marking a pivotal moment during the watch industry's "quartz crisis." This era, characterized by a transition from nearly 500 years of mechanical watch manufacturing to the innovative quartz technology, revolutionized timekeeping. Quartz technology, coupled with liquid crystal display (LCD), allowed a transformative approach to how we measure time. The release of the Chrono-Quartz, as the world's first watch combining digital and analogue displays, was a remarkable achievement in 1976, though it may seem quaint by today's standards.
As we enter 2024, we find ourselves at a comparable turning point with Generative AI. This burgeoning technology is poised to cause widespread disruption, yet we are still in the early stages of its integration. My five-part series, “The Three Phases of AI in the Workplace,” explores how initial applications of GenAI are likely to augment existing processes designed before the advent of this technology. Much like the Chrono-Quartz, which integrated new technology into traditional designs, we are now incorporating Generative AI capabilities into established workflows and processes.

What then became of the Chrono-Quartz, and what might this signify for 2024 and beyond?
The Omega Seamaster Chrono-Quartz's tenure as a leading chronograph was brief. By 1979, it was discontinued, with a production run of only 15,000 units. Nonetheless, its impact was significant. In many respects, the Chrono-Quartz was a forerunner in the smartwatch category. What was once a novel and niche product in 1976, smartwatches, particularly the Apple Watch, have since become ubiquitous. The journey from a basic LCD timer on a traditional timepiece to today's multifunctional digital watches – offering everything from personalized health tracking to phone call capabilities – highlights the profound evolution in this space. While outpaced by modern technology, the Chrono-Quartz remains an important historical marker: the beginning of a new era. And that is precisely how I envision 2024 and Generative AI.
