Growing up in a challenging environment in Atlanta, Georgia, Inky Johnson had one goal: to make it to the NFL and provide a better life for his family.?
He worked tirelessly, overcoming obstacles most can't imagine.?
Growing up he never slept in a bed by himself...until his recruiting?visit to the University of Tennessee.
His hard work paid off and he earned a scholarship to play football at the University of Tennessee, where he quickly became a standout defensive back.
Before the 2006 season, Inky was projected to be a 1st round NFL draft pick.
He 'made it.'? But everything changed on September 9, 2006.?
In a routine tackle against Air Force, Inky suffered a career-ending injury that left his right arm paralyzed.?
His lifelong dream of playing professional football was shattered in an instant.?
Most would have been devastated, allowing it to define them.?
But not Inky.?
Instead, he embraced his new reality, choosing to see his injury as a blessing rather than a curse.?
He pursued education, earned his master’s degree, and embarked on a mission to inspire millions with his story.?
Today, Inky Johnson is a sought-after motivational speaker, using his journey to teach others about perseverance, gratitude, and purpose.
I love following his work and talks because he has a ground sense of purpose and a mindset that I envy.
My favorite is his perspective on a term my industry usually gets wrong: Generational Wealth
As he puts it:
"Oftentimes when people speak about generational wealth, they speak about it from the framework of economics & money.?
When they speak about generational wealth, they talk about passing things down financially.?
But I was raised at a level of generational wealth that is also the things that were instilled within you—how your mother raised you, how your father raised you, how you treat people, how you do things, how you show up, how you take care of yourself.
And so with me and my children, I'm trying to instill, not only give them a level of generational wealth, but I'm trying to instill a level of generational wealth.?
I understand the greatest gift that I could ever give to my children is not a house, it's not a car, it's not some land even though all those things are phenomenal and great.?
The greatest gift I could ever give to my children is a good last name.?
How do I build a good last name??
How I treat people and how I do things."
-----------------------
I think about the messenger here.
He grew up with nothing...worked diligently...lost his dream in an instant...and then rebuilt himself...and is now an inspiration to millions...because he had Real Generational Wealth.
And now he is passing it to his kids.
