Generational Shift

A generational shift is undergoing. By 2030, Gen X is on the verge of retirement and Gen Z is rising through the industry's ranks. During this short moment of generational equilibrium, two values exist side by side: institutional knowledge and experience on the one hand, and digital facility on the other. The former includes immeasurably valuable industry and systems knowledge that isn’t easily replicated with a simple algorithm. The latter comprises natural ease with technology that can facilitate if not automate certain operations across the board.
The shift from Gen X to Gen Z in the workforce and society at large is a significant one, driven by factors like technology, economics, and social changes. Here's a breakdown of some key differences:
Technology:
·???????? Gen X: Witnessed the rise of personal computers and the internet, but weren't necessarily digital natives. Adaptable, but may prefer face-to-face communication.
·???????? Gen Z: Grew up with smartphones and social media as constant companions. Highly digital fluent and comfortable with online collaboration tools.
Work Values:
·???????? Gen X: Known for their independence, self-reliance, and work-life balance focus. May value stability and loyalty to employers.
·???????? Gen Z: Entrepreneurial, purpose-driven, and prioritize flexibility and remote work options. Value social impact and a company's commitment to social responsibility.

Social Issues:
·???????? Gen X: Came of age during a time of economic uncertainty and cynicism. May be less vocal about social issues.
·???????? Gen Z: Highly socially conscious and active. Advocate for causes like climate change, racial justice, and LGBTQ+ rights.
Communication:
·???????? Gen X: More likely to prefer in-person communication or email. May see constant digital connection as a negative.
·???????? Gen Z: Comfortable with a variety of communication channels, including texting, social media, and video conferencing. Thrive in fast-paced information sharing environments.
Leading up to 2030, there is a critical opportunity for a two-way mentorship to occur that could help shepherd a sensible and sustainable path for AI adoption—one guided by both digital literacy and essential deep knowledge on the workings of the industry.
