With all the fad diets in the fitness industry, you may have heard about Gene diets or DNA diets.
The premiss is that you can find out, at a cost I might add, a diet tailored to your genetic individuality.
In my experience, people find it hard to stick to the basics. You know the boring stuff like drinking 2L of water minimum a day or eating your "five a day"
So, to me this just sounds like another escape goat that steals responsibility from the individual.
But let's take a look and see what the evidence says.
Introducing, Aldubayan et al. (2022)
A Double-Blinded, Randomized, Parallel Intervention to evaluate biomarker-based nutrition plans for weight Loss was carried out in 2022.
Which is pretty high up on the validity pyramid for research papers.
This study tested the changes in weight loss, body composition, and various biomarkers between a diet based on genetic factors and a diet that includes general recommendations.
A group of 100 participants were used and divided into two groups.
One group used a Preventonomics System, to gave personal traits and behaviours and Gene difference to produce a more tailored diet plan.
The second group were given generic diet advice.
Both groups were giving behavioural interventions with each group having the same overall calories.
The Outcome
Counter to the the researchers optimism, there was no significant difference between study groups in weight loss and both groups had changes in blood bio markers.

Around 20 different biomarkers were compared within both groups and both diet approaches resulted in changes for the better.
