Violence against women is a pervasive global issue, with approximately 1 in 3 women worldwide experiencing physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime. In 2023 alone, an average of 140 women and girls were killed daily by intimate partners or family members, totaling 51,100 deaths that year.

Addressing violence against women necessitates a comprehensive strategy that includes legal reforms, educational initiatives, and active community involvement. Global feminist movements diligently work to raise awareness, advocate for policy changes, and foster societal shifts toward gender equality. Supporting these efforts and amplifying survivors’ voices are crucial steps toward a future where women live free from violence and discrimination.

Despite these harrowing statistics, countless women have demonstrated remarkable resilience, overcoming adversity to inspire change. We all know about Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist, survived a Taliban attack and continues to advocate for girls’ education worldwide. Similarly, Samra Zafar, a Pakistani-Canadian human rights activist, escaped an abusive marriage and now works to support domestic violence survivors.

Women have made significant contributions across various sectors, demonstrating resilience and leadership. In politics, Kamala Harris made history as the first woman and first person of color to serve as Vice President of the United States. In business, Mary Barra became the first female CEO of General Motors, leading the company through transformative changes. In literature, Maya Angelou’s profound works continue to inspire generations. These trailblazers exemplify the profound impact women have on advancing society and underscore the importance of fostering gender equality in all fields.

Throughout history, numerous women have defied societal norms to make significant contributions across various fields, inspiring generations worldwide. Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and remains the only person awarded Nobel Prizes in two different sciences—Physics and Chemistry. Her groundbreaking research on radioactivity paved the way for advancements in cancer treatment and medical imaging. Similarly, Eleanor Roosevelt redefined the role of First Lady by actively championing human rights, women’s issues, and social justice. She later served as the first chairperson of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, playing a pivotal role in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
