Introduction:
Gender equality between women and men refers to equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities for women and men/girls and boys. Gender equality implies that the interests, needs, and priorities of both women and men are taken into consideration recognizing the diversity of different groups of women and men. Gender equality that provides a level playing field for men & women so that they have a fair chance to realize equal outcomes, The ultimate goal in gender equality is to ensure that women and men have equitable access to, and benefit from society’s resources, opportunities, and rewards. And, as part of this, women need to have equal participation in defining what is valued and how this can be achieved. Over the years, women have been discriminated on many issues be it education, early marriage, not allowed to work and domestic violence from their male counterparts. We as a society need changes to have a balanced life. Gender equity denotes an element of interpretation of social justice, usually based on tradition, custom, religion, or culture, which is most often to the detriment to women.
Men and women aren’t actually fundamentally different in every way. Actually, any two individual men or any two individual women are more likely to have a higher degree of a difference than the average man and average women. So why should men and women have the same rights despite differences? Because we expect two individual men to have the same rights despite their differences, Also, most of the differences you can measure in men and women aren’t actually that important to decide who gets more human rights. Like should men have more rights because they’re more likely to be taller? Heavier? More muscle mass? None of that makes sense, because there are always going to be some women who are taller, heavier, or stronger than some men. That makes a physical difference a very arbitrary standard to measure worth by.
But what about psychological differences, that too is an arbitrary standard, because we can’t accurately measure it, and we really can’t be sure how much difference is determined by the environment. Nature vs nurture, you know? We’re reasonably sure that women tend to perform worse on simple tests when they’re told that men always do better on them how does phenomenon factor into how scientists measure “masculine” traits in women?
Most gender academics agree that men and women aren’t the same- how can they be, when there are so much individual difference and nuance in the human experience in general? And then you factor in things like religion, and nationality, and race, and sexuality, and the idea of comparing men as a category to Women as a category just becomes so tangled up that you can’t come up with any real answer.
When people say men and women should be the same, what they really mean is this: everyone should be paid equally for performing the same job. Everyone should have equal access to education. Everyone should have equal access to athletics. Gender roles shouldn’t be a thing, because, as stated previously, two women are going to differ from each other a lot more than the Average Man and Woman differ from each other, and it makes no sense to try to cram all women into one category and all men into another. The difference is celebrated in gender academia- inequality is not.
Benefits of gender equality:
Depends if you mean equality of opportunity, or equality of outcome,
Equality of opportunity for genders, like any other equality of opportunity, means that more people get to do what they want and enjoy (happier society), and people who are better at specific things aren’t held back by things that have nothing to do with those things (a more productive society).
Equality of outcome on the other hand… I’m hard-pressed to think of any advantages.
I hope it includes the change of mindset of women as well. Many of them are well educated and high earners. In choosing their male partners if they are heterosexual it should be about love and compatibility and not status or income. If this doesn’t change then it’s not an equal situation for all. Men won’t think twice to marry the women they love no matter her economic status but the reverse is still quite infrequent. Women who don’t work or are in low paying jobs still can get married and if they are pretty can marry well, whereas men in a similar situation have a fat chance, no matter how they look if things don’t change. It’s tougher being a man these days actually.
Need for gender equality:
Above is a simple image, but once you see it you realize why there is so much confusion around gender-based grievances in modern society. While the very tippy top of the hierarchy (.001%) is largely men, the vast majority of men are far below women overall in terms of benefits, privileges and quality of life. There may be fewer women at the very top, but they’re also excluded from a lot of horrors that men on the bottom deal with (dangerous and inhumane work conditions, homelessness, prison, war, murder, etc.
The idea that women are oppressed and the underclass of modern western society is largely a myth, Feminists have pushed for laws forcefully requiring women to occupy the top .001% based on sheer quota over meritocracy, but never attempt to change the fact that women are extremely under-represented in all of the least desirable jobs and positions at the very bottom of society.
I hate to break it to you, but that’s not equality, that’s a desire for female supremacy.
Further reading and findings:
We need gender equality for a variety of reasons. Gender equality is required because of late there have been a lot of disturbances in the society, for which this inequality is responsible. Gender equality works at breaking the stereotypes of the patriarchal/matrilineal society. Both types of societies focus on giving maximum power to ONE gender. This creates a lot of problems and these stereotype sharing rained in our minds for ages. Examples:-
1. In a patriarchal society, it is always looked down when a man cries. He is labelled 'effeminate' or 'not a man'. - Why can't a man cry and let his feelings out? Does crying mean that he is weak? No. Crying is just a medium for expressing one's sorrow and joys.
2. If we look at the advertisements that appear on the matrimonial page in 'wanted bride' of any newspaper, we will identify common stereotypes ruling the column.
These are none other than labels like 'very fair’, ‘slim', 'beautiful'. We are doing nothing but blindly follow the patriarchal stereotype of 'good girl'.
I have heard so many people rejecting 'girls' in the first meeting because she was 'not fair’, ‘not slim 'etc.
However, we have the stereotype of 'tall, dark and handsome' for men. A lot of times, gender equality is thought of something as 'women empowerment' or 'social upliftment of women', but the real case is that it works equally at both the levels i.e. at the level of man and woman.
If we are asking people to give equal opportunities to women in terms of freedom, independence, work etc. Then we should also focus on giving the same freedom and independence to men when it comes to the expression of emotions, and not impose or question their manhood by their actions. Gender equality is a complex term to understand, and the only way to achieve it is to start educating our new generation about it by not imposing any sort of stereotypes on them. It is more of balancing and equating power between the two sexes.
Once we properly understand and inculcate this notion, we will be able to decrease the number of crimes relating to violence against both men (yes, it is less as compared to women but is present) and women.
Disadvantages of Gender Equality:
1. People would treat you as an individual, admire, or hate your qualities on an individual level, that means no stereotyping and no generalization; this can be a disastrous situation for the people who like to seek patronage, favour, or appreciation based on the gender norms and stereotype.
2. You would need to earn respect, property, and lineages based on the actions you perform, rather than owing it right away at a birth stroke.
3. There would be no one you could claim as your property.
4. Marriage would no longer mean a right to own someone’s body,
5. Childbirth irrespective of gender would be a celebration.
6. The sense of protecting someone and the pride of being sole bread earner would no longer be attached with you.
7. All the fairness cream companies would have to be on a run (which can significantly affect our GDP), as people would soon realize that there are many more things to do in life than just trying to woo opposite gender.
8. All love stories irrespective of the protagonist is male, female or others would be respected; a costly affair for Bollywood filmmakers who are the promoters of a streamline love story in the society.
9. Days and night would only be different because of the presence or absence of sunlight
10. Just a casual interaction with the opposite gender may not be treated as a sign of an affair.
Well, there are really a lot of disadvantages of gender equality, far more than I can ever write or think.
When will women have the same rights as men?
It’s true, women have less right than men, but men also have less right than women. A man will be shunned by civilization if he is as much as accused of rape, even though he’s been proven innocent. A woman? She’ll be comforted by society, also told that it’s wrong, but everyone would try to teach her how to fix it even after she’s proven guilty. Rape victims, if it’s a guy, will be told to “man up” and be stronger next time and don’t be so weak. Women rape victim are always, always helped by everyone, and I’m not saying that is wrong, I’m just saying why not for men too? A woman can run for president (in fact, look at Hillary Clinton), she can run for any position in government. You just don’t see it as much as men because the people who vote them in are still slightly sexist. They have the same rights. In fact, I can’t think of a single right that men have that women don’t have. These feminists aren’t calling for gender equality; they’re calling for women dominance over men. Yes, men have dominated for a long time, but we’re just getting out of single-gender dominance and towards equality. Why can’t everyone see this…?
Personal views :
Our aim should be that men and women should be treated equally in social, economic, and all other aspects of society, and to not be discriminated against on the basis of their gender. We have to play an important role in changing the mindset of society. There should be no comparison between the two genders, as both possess equal powers. For the centuries, the male gender has always been privileged with many rights, and females have been discriminated. It is high time to change the philosophy of nature doesn’t discriminate between anyone then who we are as humans to divide rules and powers between two humans from different genders per se. We are talking about the issue for years, but what requires is to change our mindset first, try to implement new changes and motivate people, and most importantly encourage our girls to come forward and try new things and create a name for them and for the society.
If we look at the past, our mother’s, and sisters always motivated us to do better and excel in life. Even there has been a situation, when a wife becomes a mother, she leaves her job to take care of the child, but should we follow this? Isn’t man should also take care, and ask her wife to continue the job, and follow the passion as both of us can share the load together. It’s important to divide the work, so one dream doesn’t get crushed with the burden. What all is required a better society with no boundaries, where we can live peacefully and respectfully and we can surely achieve with equality in our homes, in society and community at large. Gender equality, besides being a fundamental human right, is essential to achieve peaceful societies.
