Only 17% of unicorns in India are Women led though 48.5% of Indians are Women.

There is a massive untapped potential if we improve this problem by taking simple, small steps in our own possible way.

Key highlights of Gender Diversity in the Indian Startup Ecosystem -

  • $11B raised across 785 funding deals by women.
  • 58% CAGR of venture capital inflow in women-led startups between 2016-2021.
  • The ecommerce sector is the highest number of funded startups with women co-founders.

Sadly,

  1. Only 15% of Startups in India have > 50% of women employees.
  2. Only 23% of VC firms in India have > 50% women employees.
  3. Funding in Women-led startups is largely skewed towards the top 3 Indian startup hubs - Bangalore, Delhi NCR & Mumbai.

Some women are doing amazing work in the Startup + VC spaces shown in the image along with?Sakshi Chopra,?Harsha Kumar,?Shweta Bhatia,?Vani Kola (vanik.eth),?Pearl Agarwal,?Padmaja Ruparel,?Nandini Mansinghka?and many more.

In my opinion, things are slowly changing for the better but a lot needs to be done to make the Indian Startup & VC Ecosystem successful.

?One of the ways to resolve the issue of gender diversity in the Indian startup ecosystem is to create more opportunities for women to become entrepreneurs. This could be done by providing more access to resources such as capital, mentorship, and networking. Additionally, it is important to create a culture of inclusion where women are respected and given equal opportunities to succeed. This could be done by promoting diversity and inclusion initiatives in the workplace and providing training and development programs that are tailored to the needs of women. Madhur Jain
