Gender bias at workplace and professional environment

Gender bias, disparity & lip-service. Are we really honest?

Everyone tries to be a gentleman supporting women and equality but we still see unequal rewards for women in sports, jobs and other places (for same position, rank or level)

We have to accept as individuals either:

  • We failed as a society and individuals to provide equal opportunities to women and we are responsible for the bias against women (We = male or female).
  • Women are getting the opportunities like men. Still there are challenges, politics and other issues which often men, women and every one has to face. It is not good but it is part of life.

If it is case 1. who is stopping us to solve this? All those who are convinced with point number 1, why are they waiting for others to solve this situation. If we decide to solve this long pending issue, we should not keep crying but should always come forward with information about our contribution to resolve it. We should not blame others but should share stories from our side, what we are doing for it. Just like we post everything on social and professional networks.

Are we honest?

Are we dishonest and suffering from social bias or moral bias? Are we suffering from "elite inferiority syndrome"?. A sickness due to our deep inner inferiority complex and to over come it we try to be elite and without knowing and understanding we just copy cat some behaviors, we make statements to be known as gentlemen. Are we involved in social showoff?, did we make social topics a fashion and status symbol? Do we share our concerns towards social issues, only to be considered as nice human being without knowing it and without doing anything for it and in that, some times we echo wrong voices and do more damage to the society? Why this trend is more harmful than helpful?

Elitism caused right wing to succeed

See the growing political polarization around the world. This wiki link gives some ideas. For those innocents who are not aware of this, here and here are the links to some interesting posts. Why it is happening recently after long time rejection of right wing by people? There are specific micro level reasons we can describe for success of right wing but can we reject the idea that too much of so called elitism, protectionism by elites or sympathy politics lead to growing opposition among general masses for elitism and as a result they started thinking that certain classes, races, groups were taking (or given) undue advantage. This thinking is wrong but the way elites were engaged in lip service without any logic and without any efforts, it caused just opposite of what elites were saying.

Instead of speech, if elites would have given right opportunities to the women when elites were in decision making position, the situation would have quickly changed. #MeeToo movement has exposed those gentlemen who never left a chance to exploit women when these gentlemen were in power.

Suitable for certain jobs v/s choosing certain jobs

Is it a long perceived notion that women are suitable for certain jobs (or certain jobs are suitable for them) ? or In reality some people (women or men) choose certain types of jobs based on their needs, taste, convenience and situation/context/background (personal, social, geographical etc).

Is it possible that a women decides to leave her job at certain point in time of her career to take care of her kids or for her comfort? One of my manager decided to leave her bright career when she was at peak of her career. When I asked her why she was leaving the job when she could work from home or even my company was allowing her to work half time (50%) only? She told me "Even if I have freedom of working from home, even if I have permission to work 50% of time, I will still be at work and that will be stealing time of my kids, my family and my personal comfort". She wanted to enjoy life with her kids and it was her decision otherwise she would have gained top position later in the company. Can we see it as: "some of the women and even men decide to work for specific assignments which are comfortable to them and by virtue of that they are not seen in several industries or roles in big numbers"? I don't deny the fact that there are less numbers of women in some industries or roles, for example when I go to a software architect seminar, or meetup, I see almost none (less than 1%) women participants. Does it means that they are not given opportunities or blocked?

Based on answers of above questions can we say that whatever the percentage of men or women is in a certain industry/job function, every one in the same job should get same rewards/compensation irrespective of their gender? Unfortunately this has not happened in the industry after so many years.

Is it a matter of some being in advantageous position than others?

I am assuming for a moment that there are many places where women are not getting opportunities to grow. Who can change the situation? and how it can be changed? Many societies had been male dominating societies and in that case I can understand that men were influential. Once some people become influential, it doesn't remain subject of gender but becomes survival of those who are in advantageous position.

Women will have to take control to resolve equality issues

If we believe that women have to fight for their due and they don't get equal opportunities, this is not going to change unless women take control. This is not going to be resolved by speeches of dominating males. If women come to power they can be the best to provide equality to the women. The biggest question is: Why in the history of U.S.A. there had been no women president? Last elections gave a chance to all US women to make the history. If all women would have voted for Hilary Clinton, she would have been in power. She was not less qualified for the job still she didn't get chance against Barack Obama and later against Mr. Trump.

I may be wrong but there are two possibilities:

  • Either it was a matter of merit (she was not fit for the job) or
  • Bias (she is a victim).

If we say it is because of merit (not bias or unjust), it is unbelievable that in the history of USA there were no capable women who could be the leader of the country. Even if we still argue that it is because of merit, we should accept that some may have to wait for years and generations for a post or role and should not complain about any bias only because they didn't yet get that role or didn't achieve success.

If it is the second reason or in simple words she(Hilary Clinton) was defeated because she was a woman, whole society (including elites) is responsible for it and we should stop blaming others, we should stop claiming we are better than others. At the same time, are US women not more responsible, who knew that:- biased, controlling males were not going to give chance to Hilary and it was responsibility of women to vote one-sided in favor of Hilary?. This is a question not a judgement, I am not sure what is the right answer?

At the end...

All this was just for the arguments, I know that there are challenges, there are biases, there are inequalities and exploitation, not only against women but against others too. It is because some are in advantageous position, it is against weak and it requires correction. The only point I wanted to make through this post is, instead of high claims and lip-service to become elite we should put some honest effort and when it is our chance to decide, when we are in advantageous position we should resist misusing our position. And this message is for all those who were looking out for robots (human machines) for their sole benefit and they set hiring criteria/objectives in their companies according to that and because of this there is disparity in their companies. See following post which inspired me to write this post: https://dailycaller.com/2017/08/13/google-code-jam-finalists-are-all-men-for-14th-year-in-a-row/ . It will be very difficult for Mr. Pichai to explain this situation mentioned in the above article about NO WOMEN FINALIST IN "GOOGLE CODE JAM" IN THE HISTORY OF GOOGLE (14th YEAR IN A ROW)?

p.s. Just to clarify two things:

  1. I am not at all supporter of the views that god made us unequal based on race, gender or anything else. It is our society and our preferences due to which we are in to where we are. It is not any genes in any particular race or gender which makes them better than other race or gender. It is a matter of individual's interests, the opportunities they get and social circumstances.

2. I am not a supporter of extreme left, right or any other extremism.

I will be waiting for your feedback, views and response in comments sections of this post.

This particle is quite thought provoking.? So many times women are not given opportunities under the pretext of they not being ready for the job because they have other responsibilities to shoulder.? They always judge us on what we cant do instead of what we can do.??
