Gender-Based Violence

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) refers to harmful acts directed at individuals based on their gender. It encompasses a wide range of physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuses, and is rooted in unequal power dynamics and systemic gender inequalities. GBV proportionately affects women and girls, but men, boys, and individuals of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities can also experience it.

Forms of Gender-Based Violence

1. Physical Violence: Assault, domestic violence, or any physical harm inflicted on a person due to their gender.
2. Sexual Violence: Includes rape, sexual assault, harassment, and exploitation.
3. Emotional and Psychological Abuse: Manipulation, threats, verbal abuse, and coercive control.
4. Economic Abuse: Withholding financial resources, denying access to work or education, or exploiting someone economically.
5. Harmful Cultural Practices: Female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, honor-based violence, and dowry-related abuse.
