Gender-Based Perceptions on Leadership

Gender-Based Perceptions on Leadership

The debate on gender and leadership has been discussed widely, as women did not have leadership positions until a few decades ago. A leader must possess skills and traits to become successful regardless of their gender. Therefore, successful leaders, whether male or female, have common characteristics.

Successful leaders have common skill sets and traits. They are confident, committed, courageous, passionate, and ambitious. They also share their visions with their followers by communicating their goals and leading by example to direct their teams effectively (Northouse, 2018). With these skill sets and traits, they can guide and inspire their followers to build a team committed to achieving organizational goals.

Every leader has their unique leadership style. Nonetheless, women lean more towards democratic and transformational styles, while men are mainly authoritative and charismatic (Northouse, 2018). The differences in leadership styles should not devalue leadership skills and traits based on gender. Every leader requires these skills and attributes to perform their roles successfully.

I’ve had the opportunity to experience being led by both genders where I attest that there’s no major difference among both of whom and it all depends on the organization culture, level of authority and subordinates’ ability to adapt. Thank you for this enriching article.

True and I have not seen gender specific leadership qualities neither in research nor in practice. Women may posses a different strength level in some competencies and skills but that is not related to who they are as much as how they developed these skills and competencies through a past and present context.
