Is GenAI being overhyped or is it here to stay?

Yes, there is a lot of hype around ChatGPT, however given the myriad of companies that are integrating ChatGPT into their business operations and existing applications, it may NOT be a “fad”. If the early signs are any indication, over the course of next few months we will see more and more companies leveraging ChatGPT.

Following is a slew of companies that are now, or in the near future will be, reaping benefits of GenAI:

Technology companies:

  • First was Microsoft when it announced after investing $10B in OpenAI that it was going to use it to power its Bing search engine. It is now integrating its Office Suite of products with ChatGPT and is improving developer productivity by integrating OpenAI into GitHub’s Co-Pilot.

Microsoft’s OpenAI adoption also caused Samsung to consider Bing as the default search engine in place of Google Search on its mobile phones although they ultimately chose to stay with Google search.

  • Salesforce partnered with OpenAI to integrate the enterprise version of ChatGPT into its Einstein GPT which will use data from Salesforce, public companies and OpenAI to generate analytics.
  • Slack has integrated with ChatGPT to enable users to come up to speed faster on threads/ channels, use AI powered writing assistant to craft responses faster and instantly search for any topic. Any data that the app has permission to access will not be used to train ChatGPT language models.
  • Startup Tome is leveraging ChatGPT to create an “AI Storytelling partner” to enable customers to create better presentations from online documents, videos and digital content.
  • Adobe has introduced GenAI features across a variety of its platforms - Experience Cloud, Experience Manager, Journey Optimizer, Customer Journey analytics, and Market to support a wide variety of use cases from content personalization to editing to generating marketing flows to conversational experiences.
  • Juice.ai Pilot will help with SEO and generate up to 25 articles per month to spotlight products and services offered by companies eliminating the need for companies to spend innumerable hours creating content on their products and services.
  • Pegasystems launched Pega GenAI which is integrated across Pega platform for AI powered decisioning and workflow automation. This enables companies to use Pega’s GenAI platform to automatically create workflows, data models, user interfaces etc. instead of starting from scratch and creating each workflow for a given task.
  • Squirro has unveiled SquirroGPT which allows enterprises to get evidence-based results with links to data sources using its own data. SquirroGPT has been designed to be used for knowledge management, risk, compliance, audit etc.
  • Vectara has launched “AskNews”, a GenAI application to answers questions. The platform is built using Vectara’s open-source tools Vectara-ingest and Vectara-answer. It is difficult for pre-trained LLMs to be up to date on recent news and eliminate hallucinations. For ex. ChatGPT does not give an accurate answer when asked who is the CEO of Twitter. It is because ChatGPT LLMs use data from 2021. To avoid these hallucinations, AskNews has been built on recent data and is constantly updated.

Education:

  • Duolingo launched Duolingo Max, a subscription-based tier powered by GenAI technology with two new features, one to explain answers and the other to do roleplay with the users.
  • Cheggmate, which is used by college students to assist with assignments, has launched a new service powered by GenAI and GPT-4 to further enhance its growth.
  • Udacity has created an intelligent virtual tutor using GPT-4 to provide personalized training and feedback to students. It will provide detailed explanations for problems which are customized for each student. It will also summarize concepts, explain technical terms and translate courses to a student’s native language.

Retail and Consumer Goods:

  • Coca Cola has partnered with Bain & Company to use ChatGPT and DALL-E to create personalized customer experiences i.e., create personalized ad copy, images and messaging.
  • Wendy’s is testing a drive-through service that is powered by a chatbot that uses Google’s nature-language software. The chatbot has been trained to understand the multitude of ways in which consumers order.
  • Walmart has recently unveiled a GenAI playground for its employees to test GenAI capabilities to serve customers better. They have also recently launched a tool “Ask Claude” based on GenAI to enable buyer teams to do research and improve efficiency.

Utilities and Energy:

  • Octopus Energy is using ChatGPT in its customer service channels and said that ChatGPT is handling 44% of customer inquiries and is receiving higher customer satisfaction ratings than human agents.
  • Southern Company, a leading energy provider, has launched a pilot program to manage regulatory data at electric and gas utilities using HData’s AI-based platform.

Financial Services:

  • Portfolio Pilot uses a ChatGPT plug-in to analyze portfolios for customers. Customers can copy and paste their portfolio information into the tool for analysis, receive recommendations, search for market data and ask the bot questions.
  • Deutsche Bank is piloting a tool with Google’s LLMs and generative AI to provide insights to financial analysts thus driving operational efficiencies. It believes that the pilot has potential to reduce time taken for banking operations and boosting employee productivity.

Travel:

  • Expedia is the most recent one to announce its new in-app travel planning experience powered by ChatGPT. Recommendations made by ChatGPT on places to go, where to stay etc. are stored in the app to enable users to stay organized and efficiently plan their trips. Expedia also built a plug in for ChatGPT which will enable users to book flights/ hotels etc. directly from ChatGPT. This beta application is being rolled out globally on the Expedia iOS app in English.
  • American Express is partnering with Microsoft to simplify the process of expense filing by using an AI tool to prompt users to upload images of receipt and display approval status.
  • Lockheed Martin used AI to fly a tactical aircraft. AI was used to operate Variable in-flight simulation test aircraft which can mimic performance of other aircraft. In the near future, AI could be working alongside pilots as co-pilot on aircraft and, per Emirates CEO, very soon aircraft may have only one pilot.
  • Uber is developing generative AI customer service chatbots based on Google cloud LLMs to improve customer satisfaction and drive operational efficiencies.

Given that companies across different industry segments are leveraging GenAI, it is not a fad and is here to stay! While it may take some time for companies to launch GenAI applications into the mainstream, over the next few years AI is certain to impact our daily lives.
