Cursive Fonts and Gen-Z Branding
I'm sure you heard the bells tolling --- Gen-Zers can't read cursive since they no longer teach it in schools. Is cursive dead?!
No. Embrace the Swirls! — Recently I was wondering aloud in the comment section about the place of cursive fonts in modern-day branding. Like any good detective, I had to do some digging into it. Oh, was I pleasantly surprised to find that they are very much alive and thriving.?
In fact, some of the world's most influential brands have embraced cursive fonts and are continuing to successfully connect with their audiences through them.
Take Coca-Cola, for example. This beloved beverage brand has been whisking us back in time with their elegant cursive logo for 136 years. It's literally like sipping on nostalgia!?I remember sitting on the back porch after cracking open a cold one and my grandma yelling at us kids for leaving half-full cans laying around.
Another shining example is Instagram, whose flowy logo mirrors the endless connectivity and personal touch that their platform provides. The script font also pays tribute to the legacy font that Instagram's early popularity was built upon, maximizing on that sense of nostalgia.
Even Kleenex, the ultimate comfort companion, knows the power of cursive. With its delicate and comforting script, their logo wraps us in a pillowy, cozy, and familiar embrace.
As a kid, Kellogg's accompanied us during countless breakfasts and manages to keep their logo fresh and inviting with its playful cursive font. Its branding reminds us of all those fun and vibrant childhood memories shared around the kitchen table... and the sludge of sugar at the bottom of the cereal bowl.

Barbie recently grossed billions of dollars in revenue, set the marketing world on fire, and broke a number of box-office records to boot. All this with a handwritten logo that it enchantingly utilizes to ignite imagination and euphoria in children and adults alike!?
Pinterest too, your go-to inspiration hub, incorporates a tasteful cursive logo that whispers creativity, dreaming big, and ideas coming alive!
Basically, these brands all demonstrate that cursive fonts have an enduring essence that keeps them firmly in the hearts and minds of consumers. It's all about that personal, warm connection.?
While they might seem like a throwback to an earlier era, their timeless elegance still resonates with us today. As we navigate the ever-changing world of branding, it's important not to forget their power. They can help evoke emotions, build brand loyalty, and give any brand a personalized touch of charm.

1 年I’m researching for a presentation I’ll be giving to mostly traditional age college students and this post is so helpful. Thank you for creating it, Jane! I’m finding that some students learned it and some didn’t. Professors use it in their lectures. Students need to know it.

1 年There's no reason that cursive / script writing should have been discontinued in schools. What was the reason they stopped teaching it? They've stopped teaching so many things that need to be taught, it's like they're purposefully making our children into these mindless human beings who are incapable of processing any adult tasks! No civics, home economics, art, music, geography, wood/metal workshop, health, government, geometry, statistics, basic English writing, business skills (like how to write a business letter and how to use punctuation and, most importantly, grammar matters!), etc.

1 年Maybe ongoing cursive design will force schools to adapt. But that’s so interesting.
