Gen Z - what do they bring with them?

Gen Z is the name given to the current generation of young people by many demographic researchers. According to the Pew Research Center, Generation Z consists of people born between 1997 and 2012. The oldest of this generation are reaching 25 years of age, with many now out of college, getting married, and starting families. While talk over the last decade has largely focused on understanding the work habits and attitudes of Millennials, it’s already time for a new generation to enter the fold.
There is a lot of discussion amongst many corporates on the challenges of managing this generation who are getting into the workforce. Their attitude, their approach to life etc. is the topic of constant discussion. The attitude of today's generation is a complex and multifaceted topic that varies among individuals and cultures. However, some overarching trends and characteristics can be observed when discussing the attitude of today's youth. It's important to note that generalizations may not apply to every individual, as attitudes are shaped by a wide range of factors including upbringing, environment, technology, societal changes, and personal experiences. Let us look at the positives of what this generation bring to the table:
1. Tech-Savviness and Digital Natives: Today's generation, often referred to as "digital natives," has grown up in an era of rapid technological advancement. They are accustomed to using smartphones, social media, and various digital platforms for communication, information sharing, and entertainment. This tech-savviness has transformed the way they interact with the world and gather information.
2. Social Awareness and Activism: Many young people today are passionate about social and environmental issues. They are more likely to be engaged in activism, advocating for causes such as climate change, human rights, gender equality, and social justice. This generation is vocal about their beliefs and seeks to make a positive impact on society.
3. Entrepreneurial Spirit: A significant number of young individuals are driven by an entrepreneurial spirit. They are inclined to explore creative ways to earn a living, often leveraging technology to start their own businesses or pursue freelance opportunities. The availability of online resources has enabled them to turn their hobbies and passions into viable careers.
4. Emphasis on Work-Life Balance: Unlike previous generations, today's youth value work-life balance and prioritize their well-being. They seek jobs that offer flexibility, remote work options, and opportunities to pursue personal interests alongside their professional responsibilities.
5. Diversity and Inclusion: The younger generation tends to be more inclusive and accepting of diversity in all its forms. They appreciate and respect different cultures, backgrounds, and identities. This attitude has led to greater support for LGBTQ+ rights, racial equality, and multiculturalism.
6. Instant Gratification and Impatience: Growing up in an era of fast-paced communication and technology has also led to an expectation for instant gratification. This can sometimes result in impatience and a reluctance to invest time in longer-term endeavors that may not yield immediate results.
7. Global Outlook: Globalization and interconnectedness have given today's youth a broader perspective on the world. They are more likely to engage with international news, cultures, and trends, contributing to a more globally conscious attitude.

8. Mental Health Awareness: There is a growing awareness and openness about mental health among today's generation. They are more willing to discuss mental health issues, seek support, and challenge the stigma associated with these matters.
9. Environmental Concern: Environmental sustainability is a significant concern for many young people. Climate change, pollution, and ecological issues are prominent on their radar, and they often seek eco-friendly and sustainable solutions.
10. Desire for Authenticity: Today's youth value authenticity and transparency, both in their personal relationships and in the brands and products they support. They are more likely to gravitate toward individuals and companies that exhibit genuine values and honesty.
The attitude of today's generation is a product of the unique challenges, opportunities, and experiences they face in a rapidly changing world. While there are common trends and characteristics, individual attitudes can vary widely.
Generation Z does not remember a time when the internet did not exist – and as such, it’s not surprising to learn that 50% of Gen Z spends 10 hours a day connected online, and 70% watches YouTube for two hours a day or more.
But put aside this ultra-connectivity, and Gen Zers have some unique and possibly unexpected traits. Gen Z tends to be more pragmatic, approaching both their education and career differently than Millennials. It appears that Gen Z is also?approaching money?in a unique way compared to past groups. Gen Z is also the most diverse generation and values racial equality as a top issue.
You may already have Gen Zers in your workplace – but if you don’t, you will soon.
Get used to this generation as you will be working with for quite sometime now, till Gen Alpha come to the workforce!
