Gen Z Redefines Adulthood: Responsibility Over Age, Experience Over Assets

Gen Z Redefines Adulthood: Responsibility Over Age, Experience Over Assets

What truly marks the transition into adulthood??For years, popular culture has depicted this rite of passage through small moments like filing taxes without?spiraling into a panic, or scheduling a doctor’s appointment?independently.?

However,?a new study from Life Happens and Talker Research?found?that?Gen Z respondents?are?redefining adulthood—placing the threshold at?around 27.??

For Gen Z, adulthood is less about age or traditional markers like a first apartment or job, and more about shouldering personal and financial responsibilities. The study, which surveyed 2,200 Americans across cohorts, indicates that this extended timeline reflects Gen Z’s perspective on societal shifts, including?rising living costs,?a greater?emphasis on self-discovery,?and concerns?about?long-term fiscal planning.?

Interestingly, while Gen Z is?saving earlier than previous generations,?young adults across generations?tend to?delay major financial decisions?such as purchasing homes, having children, or investing heavily in retirement plans. This shift?is?reshaping their spending patterns?as they prioritize experiences, education, and emotional well-being over the stereotypical vision of "adulting."?

Why it matters: A separate survey from Nielsen has found a strong correlation for?Gen Z?consumers to engage as?value-driven?and conscious shoppers?who are?more likely to spend on products that align with their personal beliefs, such as sustainability or inclusivity.?Recognizing?and adapting?to?this?evolving definition of?“what truly matters” as adults?can?lead to marketers building?stronger, more meaningful relationships with this target audience.?
