Gen Z and the New Era of Work: Prioritizing Mental Health, Happiness, and Experiences

By Yehuda Beller

On October 10th, we marked World Mental Health Day, a timely reminder of how critical mental well-being has become—especially in the evolving job market. When we set out to create Worklik, one of the biggest questions we asked was: Why aren’t candidates applying to jobs the traditional way anymore? The answer wasn’t as simple as it seemed.

Many previous generations of employers have looked at Gen Z and drawn conclusions—often dismissive ones. They might say:

? Gen Z job-hops because they’re lazy or uncommitted.

? They aren’t loyal to their employers.

? They don’t understand the importance of building a long-term career.

While these assumptions contain fragments of truth, they don’t tell the full story. The reality is that Gen Z has developed a completely new mindset toward work, one that we should recognize as not only valid but likely healthier for the future of work and life.

A Shift in Perspective: It’s Not Laziness—It’s Mindfulness

Looking back, each generation has redefined the idea of job stability:

? Previous generations believed in finding a job and sticking with it for 30–40 years, building a career until retirement.

? Gen X and millennials began changing this, shifting toward shorter tenures—five to ten years—before moving on.

? Now, Gen Z has taken it even further, prioritizing short-term roles and experiences, sometimes working for only a few months before switching jobs.

On the surface, this shift might look like entitlement or lack of commitment, but it’s something deeper. Gen Z isn’t just chasing a paycheck—they’re chasing happiness. They value work-life balance, mental well-being, and meaningful experiences over the traditional idea of “putting in the years” just to climb the career ladder.

Why Gen Z’s Approach Is Actually Healthy

Gen Z’s mindset emphasizes:

? Prioritizing happiness over purely financial goals.

? Creating memories over focusing only on career survival.

? Work-life balance is essential to personal well-being.

This doesn’t mean Gen Z lacks ambition—it just means their definition of success is different. They are mindful of their mental health and refuse to sacrifice happiness for the sake of tradition. In many ways, their independence and entrepreneurial spirit are redefining what it means to thrive in the workplace.

Yes, this can sometimes manifest as boldness—like when a 20-year-old demands a seat at the leadership table. But isn’t that the kind of confidence we want? Young leaders with vision and drive? Of course, managing Gen Z’s unique energy requires balance, but when you tap into their strengths, you unlock a more diverse, vibrant, and forward-thinking work culture.

Mental Health: No Longer a Taboo Topic

One of the most refreshing aspects of Gen Z is their awareness of mental health. Unlike previous generations, they don’t believe in simply “biting their lip and powering through” at the expense of their well-being. Gen Z is open-minded, self-aware, and mindful of how work impacts their mental state.

This generation values a different kind of resilience—one that includes acknowledging challenges and addressing them in healthy ways. They’ve shown us that taking care of your mind is just as important as building a career. This mindset helps shape a workplace that is more compassionate, balanced, and sustainable.

Meeting Gen Z Where They Are: Worklik’s Approach to Modern Hiring

At Worklik, we understand that the traditional way of recruiting no longer works. Today’s candidates aren’t looking for just a job—they’re looking for an experience. We’ve built a platform that speaks directly to this new mindset by:

? Selling experiences, not just jobs.

? Highlighting employer brands, not just benefits packages.

? Focusing on the moment, so candidates know they’ll feel fulfilled and supported right now—not just years down the road.

Our approach ensures that employers meet candidates where they are, offering them opportunities that align with their desire for well-being and happiness. By creating easy, engaging, and meaningful hiring experiences, we make it possible for employers to connect with this generation in a way that resonates—in the moment, on their terms.

Conclusion: A New Era of Work and Well-Being

Gen Z isn’t lazy or entitled—they’ve simply redefined success. They’ve shown us that mental health and happiness are non-negotiable and that work should be an enriching experience, not just a means of survival.

At Worklik, we celebrate this shift and work tirelessly to create hiring processes that reflect these values. We believe that when employers embrace the strengths of this new generation, they build workplaces that are more innovative, diverse, and human.

This is the future of work—and we’re here to make it happen.
