It’s only been a few years since Gen Z entered the marketplace.? In that short time, I’ve heard leaders I coa say, “Gen Z is so bad it makes me appreciate Millennials.”.
Gen Z is making a cultural shift by embracing a lifestyle known as NEET, meaning?“not in employment, education, or training.” This choice is leading to record levels of youth unemployment around the world, with about one-fifth of individuals ages 15 to 24 classified as NEETs according to the International Labor Organization.? So, what is triggering this behavior?
The easy answer is many young people find themselves unable to secure stable employment, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and rising economic challenges. I have surveyed hundreds in the Gen Z community. They say this condition is not just about economic uncertainty and an educational system that doesn’t prepare them for the current economy. They say the people doing the hiring and managing don’t get them.? Translated this means they don’t listen to me, ask me for input, or care about getting to know me as a person.
So, who does get Gen Z??? Artificial intelligence gets them.
The average time on a single screen will average between 8-10 seconds. This includes search results, social media, emails, etc.

Gen Z will interact with an AI an average of five or six questions. On an average it takes 18-20 seconds to input questions, AI to generate results and read the results. That means that Gen Z will spend between 85 and 120 seconds.? So up to a full 2 minutes of engagement.
Not only does Gen Z spend more time with AI, but it trusts AI results more than a manager input.? You see, they believe that AI is less biased and not stuck in legacy thinking.
I’ve coached a number of leaders on this subject.? We’ve worked through improvements in emotional IQ, modifying communications styles, and implementing feedback coaching.? We have been exploring using AI to create meeting summaries, follow up emails, and creating collaboration with the Gen Z workforce.
These techniques have provided excellent results.?
