Understanding Gen Z:

The perspective I offer in this article comes from my own experience parenting two Gen Zers, and coaching 25 Gen Zers over the past two years. I also draw on the experience and research of others who know much more about this generation than I do.

Each one of us – including each member of Gen Z, is a unique individual. And yet, it can be helpful to understand who they are as a generation who has never known a world without the internet or a global crisis.

Think about that for a minute. Technology has been at their fingertips since the day they were old enough to swipe. They are hyperconnected and technologically savvy! They also have not been able to escape the news, as it comes at them on numerous platforms at all hours of the day. It’s critical that we all understand what makes this generation tick, so that we can prepare to lead and manage them now and evolve with them as they move into leadership roles. Gen Z is radically different than Millennials.

In my recent LinkedIn article, ‘Coaching, Embracing & Maximizing Young Leadership Potential ,’ I discussed how Gen Z is redefining leadership, and creating a profound paradigm shift in the workplace. This go-getter generation is a force driving positive change within our organizations, and understanding them is the key to harnessing their unique power!?

  1. Gen Zers value inclusion and diversity. Remember, they themselves are one of the most diverse groups of individuals.
  2. Gen Zers are socially conscious, they have a strong desire to create a lasting social impact.
  3. Gen Zers offer a unique perspective and value individual differences.
  4. Gen Zers value empathy and engagement. They want a leader that actually cares.
  5. Gen Zers value mental well-being, a flexible work schedule and work-life balance.
  6. Gen Zers want their values to align with their work. They want meaningful work.
  7. Gen Zers are disruptors, innovators, trailblazers and often possess an entrepreneurial spirit.

Strategies for Embracing Gen Z:

Letting go of traditional workplace norms is crucial to engaging this next generation. Leading with an open mind and heart will help you embrace Gen Z’s unique perspectives.

According to HRD Connect, ‘Gen Z in the workplace: Decoding the newest powerhouse workforce,’ “To effectively engage Gen Z, leaders need strategies that bridge the gap between their expectations and current practices.”

  1. First, ditch the lecture and embrace curiosity! Foster a culture of open dialogue where you actively explore what truly motivates Gen Z employees.
  2. Create opportunities for intergenerational connection in a way that doesn’t just feel-good – but also fosters a more inclusive environment and bridges alignment gaps.
  3. Prioritize co-creation: by involving Gen Z in decision-making, you empower them and leverage their innovative potential for organizational growth.
  4. Facilitate mutual understanding and respect between generations by offering reverse-mentoring programs, which can be a game-changer.
  5. Finally, tap into Gen Z influencers inside and outside the organization to offer valuable insights into building a future-ready workplace.
