?? GEMS DOWN THE DRAIN ????

About 30 intricately carved semi-precious stones have been found at the bottom of a drain system in an ancient Roman bathhouse, which is being excavated near Hadrian’s Wall in Carlisle in England.

Known as intaglios, the stones were originally set in rings secured with vegetable glue.?The glue would have easily deteriorated in the steamy bathhouse air, resulting in the stones falling out of their settings and slipping down the drains.

The size of the gems found in Carlisle vary from 5mm to 16mm in diameter.?One was an amethyst engraved with an image of the goddess Venus, while another was a red-brown jasper engraved with an image of a satyr seated on rocks next to a sacred column.?

The incredible craftsmanship needed to engrave such tiny gemstones makes them rather valuable.?Similar stones recently sold at auction in London for between £7,000 and £30,000 each.

A CURIOUS MASTERPIECE

Everyone dreams of buying something for a snip in an old curiosity shop, and then finding out that it’s a masterpiece that could be worth millions!?

A chandelier, bought in a London antique shop for £250 in the 1960s, is expected to reach a high price when it’s auctioned in London next month.?And that’s because it’s one of the few lighting fixtures made by the famed Swiss sculptor ALBERTO GIACOMETTI, whose sculptures are among the most expensive on the market.

Giacometti, who died in 1966, is considered to be one of the most important artists of the 20th century.?His 1947 bronze piece?L’Homme au Doigt (The Man with the Finger)?sold for about £117 million in 2015.?It remains the single priciest sculpture ever to be sold at auction.

The chandelier being sold next month is thought to have been commissioned in 1946 or 1947.?It hung in the offices of the?Horizon?magazine from 1949 until the journal closed the following year.?It was placed in storage, eventually finding its way by mysterious means to an antique shop on London’s Marylebone Road in the 1960s.?The English painter JOHN CRAXTON bought it, and hung it in his Hampstead home for more than 50 years.

The chandelier is expected to sell for more money than a similar piece that sold in 2018 for about £7.7 million.
