GeM (Government e-Marketplace) is an online platform for public procurement in India. The initiative was launched on August 9, 2016 by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India with the objective to create an open and transparent procurement platform for government buyers.
Though the business models are significantly different, we should highly appreciate the way Government Ecommerce portal GeM was able to reach gross merchandise value (GMV) of $13.4 billion in almost 5 Years since its inception and slowly catching up with players like Flipkart and Amazon in terms of GMV
Why did the Government start GeM back in 2016?
Government e-Marketplace? was? a very bold step of the Government with the aim to transform the way in which procurement of goods and services is done by the Government Ministries and Departments, Public Sector Undertakings and other apex autonomous bodies of the Central Government.
Government e-Marketplace owes its genesis to the recommendations of two Groups of Secretaries made to the Prime Minister in January 2016 and subsequently taken up by the finance ministry in the Budget to have a dedicated tech driven platform.
Scale, How Big GeM is now?
More than 4 million suppliers and 59,000-plus buyers. Goods and services worth more than Rs 1 trillion were procured on the portal by the end of March, witnessing a 160 per cent jump, compared with last year. The number of orders has surpassed 3.15 million in the current financial year (2021-22, or FY22), with a growth rate of 22 per cent.
How are startups benefited?
More than 10,000 start-ups have registered on the platform and it definitely gives startup a major boost to enter into Government business. With integration with IndiaPost GeM is definitely taking a step forward to make it an end to end platform for all.
About 4.5 lakh CSC and 1.5 lakh India Post offices across India will be trained to assist last-mile government buyers, sellers and service providers regarding the GeM portal

With the volume of orders and suppliers growing, the support system of GeM is constantly working to make the technology and platform robust and world class to avoid nuisances in the end to end flow and make it more user friendly.
As an evolving technology product GeM portal is constantly upgrading tech and product enhancements to cater to the need of huge supplier and buyer space and you will be glad to know team behind GeM is constantly working on the improvement of the portal.
