Denmark has announced the upcoming launch of Gefion, one of the world’s most advanced AI supercomputers, set to become operational by late 2024. This ambitious project is backed by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO) in partnership with tech giant 英伟达 . Gefion is expected to drive groundbreaking research in fields such as life sciences, healthcare, and the green transition, supporting Denmark's role as a leader in AI and sustainable innovation.
Named after a Norse goddess, Gefion will be housed in a state-of-the-art data center designed to operate entirely on renewable energy, underscoring Denmark’s commitment to sustainability. Equipped with NVIDIA’s advanced DGX SuperPOD infrastructure and H100 Tensor Core GPUs, the supercomputer will be optimized for complex AI-driven tasks like drug discovery, genomics, medical imaging, and environmental science. Denmark currently lacks a GPU-accelerated supercomputer, so Gefion represents a critical milestone for the nation’s AI research ecosystem.
The Danish Centre for AI Innovation will manage Gefion, making it available to both public and private sectors. By providing access to unprecedented computational resources, the center aims to accelerate the development of transformative technologies, positioning Denmark as a global hub for AI-driven solutions to some of society’s most pressing challenges. The Novo Nordisk Foundation and EIFO have committed over 700 million Danish kroner (approximately $100 million USD) to the project, and all revenue generated will be reinvested to sustain and expand the initiative.
Gefion’s launch is a strategic move to strengthen Denmark’s research ecosystem in high-tech fields such as AI and quantum computing. The supercomputer's capabilities will enable Danish and international researchers to collaborate on pioneering solutions in health, sustainability, and advanced computing, reinforcing Denmark’s global competitiveness and resilience.
