Continuing this stream of positive news about new opportunities for women at work, it is heartening to see that IT & consulting firms in India are continuing their focus on improving their workplace diversity. India’s top five IT service bellwethers alone employ more than half a million women professionals. In FY23, the growth in female employees at these companies outpaced the increase in their total headcount , according to data from staffing firm Xpheno.?

While this is great news, alongside hiring more women, companies, especially IT companies, need to also look closely at what's still keeping women from making faster headway at work - one of these being working across different time zones that makes it harder for people to switch off, especially for working mothers.?

It is not enough to hire diversity.
Diverse needs arising out of diverse people should be acknowledged.

Women’s health is an aspect that is either ignored or not considered in most Indian workspaces. Period pain is a reality for many women, yet, there is no legal menstrual leave policy in place in most states in India, except Kerala and Bihar. Absence of such policy forces women to either take unpaid leaves or leaves from their regular allotment of yearly leaves. It is not enough to hire diversity. Diverse needs arising out of diverse people should be acknowledged.

A recent research showed that women are also hiding their menopause symptoms to avoid discrimination in the workplace . The report has found that 48 per cent of respondents said they would lie about why they needed a sick day, with 39 per cent admitting that they felt embarrassed to talk about menopause at work.
