Kidney disease is the number 9 greatest killer of Americans! Yes, kidney disease makes the top 10 list for ways that people die in America.
The most common problems that kidney disease can cause:
- Heart disease
- Heart attack and stroke
- High blood pressure
- Weak bones
- Nerve damage (neuropathy)
- Anemia or low red blood cell count
15% of US adults—37 million people—are estimated to have chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD is a condition characterized by a gradual loss of kidney function over time. Think about how crazy that number is, 1 out of 7 people on average have kidney health issues!
Shockingly most adults (9 out of 10) with CKD do not know they have it. That means out of the 37,000,000 people that the CDC says have kidney health issues over 33 million people don’t even know they have kidney health issues! That’s insane!

What can you do to help?
Easily the biggest thing you can do to help your kidneys is staying hydrated - Chronic liver disease is associated with primary and secondary kidney disease and functioning. Water helps maintain your liver health greatly and given that the liver and kidneys are linked. Drinking more water also helps with your kidneys.
Evidence shows that being well hydrated may reduce the risk for kidney stones. Water helps the kidneys remove waste from your blood in the form of urine. Water also helps keep your blood vessels open so that blood can travel freely to your kidneys, and deliver essential nutrients to them.
Dehydration has also been linked to high blood pressure. Just drink more water! It’s going to help your liver, kidneys and blood pressure just with this one step. Go through and number the number of ounces of water you are drinking every day for a week to get an average number of ounces per day. Then take that and increase it by 20-50%. Your future self and your health will thank you.
If you want to get your kidney health checked at a deep level if you are taking gear or allot of supplements the two most common tests you'll ask your doctor for are.
- Urine testing - for albumin to creatinine ratio
- Blood testing - glomerular filtration rate (GFR)
Both if you buy tests online and go to labcorp or quest are around $30/ea.
