Think Local

With erratic weather interrupting the reliable supply of electricity, businesses and power utilities are building their own small power plants and microgrids by installing photovoltaic solar panels and batteries. And now GE Research and GE Renewable Energy are helping them to evade the whims of nature and become less dependent on the grid. They’ve partnered with Sandia National Laboratories and the Department of Energy’s Solar Technology Office on a $1.75 million project to design, build, and test a 400-kilowatt-hour, 2-hour battery energy storage system at the GE Research campus in Niskayuna, New York. Finding a Rhythm?

For Tom Langer and millions of others who live with atrial fibrillation, the uncertainty that comes from experiencing irregular heart rhythms can be unnerving. A new personal ECG device called the KardiaMobile, from AliveCor, can be a life changer. Connecting wirelessly with a phone or tablet, KardiaMobile allows users to conduct their own ECG in 30 seconds, and compile data over time that helps their doctors search for patterns and gauge the effectiveness of treatment. GE Healthcare partnered this year with AliveCor. Find out more?here.

Good, Better, BESS

See how GE Research and GE Renewable Energy, along with Sandia National Laboratories and the Department of Energy, are designing, building, and field-testing a battery energy storage system (BESS).

?—?Quote of the Day?—

“Schools, hospitals, supermarkets, and small businesses are starting to install rooftop PV solar, but without a battery, they cannot fully utilize the value of this power. Why send it back to the grid when you can consume it yourself?”
