GDPR Overview
We wanted to share the comms that we have been sending out to clients and contacts to ensure that you are aware that the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect today (25th May). This is the European Union’s new data protection law.
Recommended practical steps to prepare
- Segment your database by geographic region to communicate directly with your subscribers in the EU.
- Check in with EU subscribers to ensure they still wish to receive communications from you. Make it easy for them to unsubscribe from your mailing list.
- Check that the third party operations you use as part of your operation are compliant with the GDPR.
Update your privacy policy
Review and if required update your privacy policy across your website properties to show that you understand these principles and are compliant with them:
- Be transparent about the personal data you are processing and collect that data lawfully.
- Be specific about your intended use for that data, and only use it for these purposes.
- Only collect what you need, and no more.
- Keep personal data safe, up-to-date and free from errors.
- Don’t keep data for longer than necessary.
The intent of this post is to provide you with enough information so you are prepared and are aware of the change in the law. We recommend talking to your legal partner to expand on any points that are applicable.
