GDPR can be loved

It doesn't have to be a big scary thing we are all panicking about. We all can love GDPR!

Just home from the We love GDPR event today – well done event team, it worked! I feel better about GDPR after today.

Thought I’d share a few notes taken while listening to the speakers…

1. It’s about a shift in the way we think about business planning, it’s not a tick box exercise that will go away. It’s a permanent change in how we think about our customer and employee experience.

2. GDPR is about treating people with respect.

3. This is an opportunity to clean up our thinking.

4. GDPR will not be your problem after 25 May, your marketing communications strategy will be your problem.

5. GDPR is essentially there for us, consumers; it will stop/reduce ‘noise’ in our inboxes. We will receive information we want, therefore, in theory, should encourage more engagement / positive action.

6. Try to think about your customer engagement like a subscription service: subscribers want the service, know what it is, have subscribed, therefore will value it (and there is a renew date).

7. It is not revolutionary, it’s what we should be doing as an ethical, customer focused business.

8. It’s about going back to basic values of being transparent, secure, giving customers control and choice, all part of your overall customer experience.

9. It is not just a marketing issue, not just IT issue, not just a process issue. It’s a mindset shift.

10. We need to review marketing performance criteria, it won’t be about volume, big email lists, it will drive quality (not quantity) of customer engagement.

There was so much more, just a snap shot of take outs above! It was useful to step back from all legal, compliance and process detail and think about GDPR through the lens of a greater purpose, and how it could benefit customer and employee experience in future. And how it will benefit us all as consumers, who will hopefully get less noise in all inboxes!

I'm not sure I love it yet, but I do feel better about it.

Thank you @)ProctorsBristol #WeLoveGDPR

Great post Eleanor - I'm looking after GDPR internal comms for my client and simplifying the messaging is a real challenge!

Thanks for this Eleanor - I have to say somewhat still unsure about what I need to do with my data....!
