GDC 2023 Takeaways

GDC 2023 Takeaways

As I sit down to write my takeaways from this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC), I am saddened by the recent news stemming from this year’s event, especially as a female in this industry. With the current situation being brought to light, I believe this is an eye-opener for many and appropriate actions must be taken in order for this industry to evolve and grow. I did recognize efforts made at GDC this year to address issues of diversity and inclusion however, the multiple cases of harassment reported are an unfortunate reality.?

It is disappointing that instead of celebrating a week of new connections, ideas and innovations, we are still at a place where many do not feel welcomed, and even worse, safe at industry gatherings. I do hope that these and other reports are taken very seriously, not only by GDC, but the industry as a whole because until this issue is recognized and addressed industry-wide, the gaming community will not progress.?

While I certainly do not want to take away from this important issue, I see value in the connections made and insight received from fellow gaming industry professionals. I’ve put together a few key learnings below in hopes that these may help spark some ideas and/or guide you on your game development journey.?

Pioneering Game Engines and AI: Shaping the Future of Game Development?

As we venture deeper into the world of gaming, new game engines, AI tools and emerging technologies are making waves and poised to redefine the game development landscape. These cutting-edge innovations have the potential to transform how games are designed, played, and experienced, ultimately pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the industry.

Change for Diversity and Inclusivity in Gaming: A Path Towards Universal Accessibility?

With the gaming industry already under pressure to tackle diversity and inclusion issues, GDC 2023 did showcase a more diverse range of speakers and provide workshops and panels centered on promoting diversity and inclusion in game development. In addition, game developers are prioritizing creating games that are accessible and inclusive for all players, a focus that reflects a broader shift within the industry. By designing games that cater to a wide array of abilities, backgrounds and preferences, developers are fostering a more inclusive gaming environment that can be enjoyed by everyone. While the industry is working towards change, it still has a ways to go for all to feel equal and safe.?

Evolution of Mobile Advertising: Getting More Personal and Engaging??

The shift towards personalized advertising continues to gain momentum and is expected to remain in 2023. Brands are increasingly utilizing AI and machine learning to deliver tailored ads to mobile users, taking into account factors such as location, browsing history and other pertinent data. In addition, interactive ads that engage users and encourage participation in the ad experience have gained popularity. Mobile advertising in 2023 could see further evolution in this direction, featuring more interactive ads that incorporate AR/VR technology or gamification techniques. Video content has become one of the most popular formats on mobile devices, a trend that is likely to persist.?

Prioritizing Data Privacy: A Proactive Approach to Mobile Success

As the number of people playing games on their mobile devices continues to grow, a solid data privacy plan is imperative for game developers’ success. In today's digital age, data privacy has emerged as a critical issue that cannot be ignored. Developers that adopt a proactive approach to safeguarding users' data are more likely to succeed in the highly competitive world of mobile gaming and advertising. By prioritizing user privacy and implementing robust data protection measures, developers can cultivate trust among consumers, leading to higher engagement and long-term loyalty.
