Gaza

This is an #Israel / #Palestine post that will make some #Jews and #Arabs mad.

1. There are no winners in war.?

2. I am so angry.?Angry at #Hamas.?Angry at Israel's dysfunctional government.?Angry about all the lives—on both sides of this conflict—that will be lost as Israel retaliates, which it must do.

3. A six year-old Palestinian-American boy was killed this week, outside Chicago, in an anti-Arab hate crime.?My heart is broken.?This is an abomination.?We can all agree on this. In this heated, violent moment, I want to see all?Jews mourn the tragic death of?Wadea Al Fayoume.

4. Do not compromise your own humanity by saying that Israel's past actions justify Hamas murdering babies, raping women, and kidnapping women and children.

5. My close friend in Israel's brother is?missing.?My family friend's 82 year old mother is missing.?My brother-in-law who has 5 young kids is defending Israel's northern border?against #Hezbollah.

6. I roll my eyes anytime I hear anyone describe Hamas or any other terrorist group as "evil."?We don't live in The Lord of the Rings.?People?are people and people do things for human reasons: power, money, habit, fame, tribal loyalty, ego, the desire to have significance. The Hamas terrorists who invaded Israel had a goal—kill Jews, take Jews hostage, disrupt the Zionist enterprise, inspire?hundreds of millions of people—and they achieved it.?

7. The West Bank is controlled by Israel.?I go there regularly.?#IDF soldiers control security and movement.?Jewish settlements are expanding.?This is a highly divisive?issue for Jews (and in Israeli politics).?Regardless of your opinion, that is the reality in the West Bank.?

8. #Gaza?is unequivocally not occupied by Israel.?In 2005 Israel?pulled all soldiers out of Gaza and forcefully dismantled all Jewish settlements in Gaza.?Gaza is unoccupied.

9. A rocket hit a hospital in Gaza yesterday and hundreds of innocent civilians?died.?The rocket was an Islamic Jihad rocket.? It was launched to kill Jewish civilians, but it accidentally killed Arab civilians. Is that more sad than killing Jewish civilians?

10. I abhor all civilian deaths, on both sides of this conflict.

11. I don't want the IDF to permanently occupy Gaza and neither do any of the Israelis I know.

12. Israel should unequivocally kill Hamas officers and militants.?But Jews and Israelis should never compromise?our own humanity by calling any Palestinians "human animals," as Israeli?Defense Minister Yoav Gallant did on October 9.

13. Am Israel?Chai.

Daniel - thank you for this. So hard to take the nuanced view, but you are 100% right in this view. Retreating further into our tribes will only harden this situation, which feels just like what Hamas/Iran wanted. Oy is the only word.

Thoughts and prayers to everyone who has lost loved ones, and those who have loved ones still missing or just hurt. I think most people are heartbroken with this Evil act. No one should ever have to go through this. I'm not for war at all, peace is what should be in place but as we see so many times we just can't get to that stage in life. USA has to step up to help in anyway possible with food, medicine, financial support. Our own government is locked in a battle itself right now and now is the time the people that needs our support should be receiving it. I have customers of all race, reliegion and they are all good people, many are good friends, and everyone single person I've spoken to is so worried about how this whole thing undermines humanity. God be with all of the suffering right now, your in my families thoughts and prayers as you navigate through all this sadness.

Such twisted arguments and a distraction to the fact that helpless Palestinian, humans like me and you, including women and children are being killed as we speak.

Every time I see the events of the tragedies of war, I am reminded of the powerful lessons in "The Trojan Women" a play written by Euripides in 415 BC. Yes, that's right - 415 BC. He understood the tragedy and senselessness of the violence of war. Seems as though we should revisit the classics.
