Gauteng Health: Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics
“There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” This is famous quote from Mark Twain who in turn attributed it to Benjamin Disraeli.
And there's is Mark Twain's other famous quote as well" Facts are stubborn things, but statistics are pliable.”
The part about pliable statistics seems to have reached the Gauteng Department of Health. This department has numbers problem. The Auditor-General concluded as much, but we all know they use bogus numbers. The question is, are they deliberately misleading the public, or do they simply lack the skill to collect stats?
Let's go back. Do you still remember the significant issue of the surgical backlog in Gauteng, when the Democratic Alliance(DA) released the backlog numbers and the Gauteng Health Department countered with their own, more optimistic figures? Well, those numbers seem to have been fabricated. And it seems this is becoming a trend. If they can't improve the numbers, they'll just lie.
Take the following example.
After the video featuring Tom London exposed the poor care at Helen Joseph Hospital, Gauteng Health spokesperson cited a reported 86% satisfaction rate among Gauteng patients as the evidence of good service. However, this statistic was clearly fabricated. The Auditor General(AG) concluded that there is no evidence to support this claim. Anyone who use Gauteng hospitals knew that number was wrong. It was thumb sucked!
There's a discrepancies between the actual and the reported achievement in the number of adults on anti-retroviral treatment according to the AG. There is no evidence to back up those achievements. The stats were "cooked" there by 45 Commissioner Street.
Then there's fatality rate for diarrhea and pneumonia among children under five years old which Gauteng Health also could not back up their "achievement" with numbers. The list is long!
The Gauteng Health Department's manufactured "successes" are running into the reality. The Auditor General's report unequivocally exposes the department's deceptive practices. According to the report, numerous claims of achievement by Gauteng Health could not be substantiated due to a lack of adequate supporting evidence. Furthermore, the Auditor General noted that the absence of credible information poses a significant risk to the department's operations. Inaccurate data can lead to flawed planning, budgeting, and oversight, ultimately hindering the effective delivery of primary healthcare services.
Anyone who has used Gauteng Healthcare facilities knows they are a mess. You don't need fancy spreadsheets to know that. Gauteng Health has been gaslighting citizens for years. It's a go-to strategy. Every time they make headlines for the wrong reasons, they pull glorious statistics out of thin air to show how well they are doing.

The question is whether their inaccuracies are due to incompetence or intentional deceit, the latter being a far more serious matter.
The answer to this question might be found in Professor Malegapuru Makgoba's exit interview. In June 2023, the former Health Ombudsman concluded his seven-year tenure with a scathing assessment of Gauteng, South Africa's economic powerhouse and most densely populated province. As quoted, Professor Makgoba stated, 'You have your best province run by Mickey Mouse. What can you expect? A service that is in shambles.' It seems that Gauteng Health is indeed living in a make-believe world of Disney.
