Gastroenteritis does not require interrupting breastfeeding
I received an email from a physician who was in a heated discussion with colleagues about a 1 year old baby with diarrhea (not the baby in the photo below). The toddler breastfed a couple of times a day, but the mother was being urged to interrupt breastfeeding because of the diarrhea.I thought interrupting breastfeeding for diarrhea went out years ago. The BEST TREATMENT FOR DIARRHEA (and vomiting, though this baby was not vomiting), is BREASTFEEDING. Only occasionally does a breastfed baby/toddler require oral rehydration fluid, and even less often intravenous rehydration. And even then, breastfeeding should continue. Breastfeeding comforts the sick child and also comforts the mother. For more information on breastfeeding and gastroenteritis: https://ibconline.ca/gastroenteritis/

6 年Thank, Dr Newman for being such an advocate for breastfeeding babies and toddlers. I to thought those kinds of recommendations had stopped years ago.
