Gas turbine Load rejection test

Introduction

  • A gas turbine load rejection test is a type of performance test conducted on a gas turbine to assess its ability to withstand sudden changes in load conditions. During normal operation, gas turbines are designed to handle changes in load smoothly and efficiently. However, load rejection tests are conducted to evaluate the turbine's response to sudden load reductions or complete load loss.
  • The purpose of a load rejection test is to assess the gas turbine's stability and control system response when a sudden load change occurs. This test is typically carried out under controlled conditions with the turbine operating at a steady-state load. The load is then quickly reduced or completely removed, and the turbine's response to this change is observed and analyzed.
  • During a load rejection test, various parameters are monitored and analyzed, including turbine speed, exhaust gas temperature, fuel flow, and power output. These parameters provide valuable information about the turbine's ability to handle load transients and maintain stable operation.

Process and Test purpose

  • To check the dynamic characteristics of the gas turbine

  1. FSNL operation mode (FSNL)

Opening the Generator circuit breaker GCB, GT will run at full speed no load (FSNL), following the compliance of overspeed trip non-activation (Neither electrical nor mechanical) with the unit parameter (Excitation, Terminal voltage, Gas flow, gas reducing station pressure, Electrical loads stability, AVR performance, governor mode,.....etc).

2. House load operation mode

Opening the electrical network breaker and the unit will be isolated from the network working in island mode (House load operation). The auxiliary transformer will be fed from the unit itself and follow the compliance of overspeed trip non-activation (Neither electrical nor mechanical) with the unit parameter (Excitation, Terminal voltage, Gas flow, gas reducing station pressure, Electrical loads stability, AVR performance, governor mode,.....etc).

It's important for gas turbine operators to understand load rejection scenarios and have appropriate measures in place to mitigate risks and ensure safe and stable operation of the power plant.
