Gaming Mondays #4: Fortnite Rises, Call of Duty Introduces Squid Game & Playstation Celebrates 30 Years

Hey Fam

This week has a lot of exciting news and updates. We start with Fortnite’s recent record breaking season, which has had it’s ups and downs. Mostly ups though. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will feature Squid Games! Yes, red light, green light is going to be available. Next, PlayStation will celebrate 30 years of play tomorrow, while Epic Games is about to release a Marvel fist-shooter game called “Marvel Rivals”.

Let’s get into it.

Fortnite's Record-Breaking 'Remix: The Finale Event

On November 30, 2024, Fortnite once again demonstrated its unparalleled ability to captivate audiences worldwide. If you were one of the 14 million concurrent players tuned into Fortnite’s latest event, Remix: The Finale, you were likely dancing at “The Doggpound,” vibing to Snoop Dogg, Ice Spice, Eminem, and a tribute to Juice WRLD. This is officially the platform’s most-streamed in-game event to date.

Epic Games proudly announced the numbers on X (formerly Twitter):

“You. Showed. Up. More than 14 million concurrent players partied up for Remix: The Finale and more than 3 million estimated people streamed it online. This is a new Fortnite all-time record for an in-game concert - thank you!”

For context, that’s a bigger live audience than many major global events. And if you factor in YouTube and Twitch streams, millions more joined in on the action. But what makes this achievement even more staggering is how far Fortnite has come since its early days of in-game concerts.

Epic Games Responds to Fortnite “Ready Up” Bugs

Fortnite Chapter 6 launched with a bang, featuring anime-inspired aesthetics, a long-awaited return to OG Mode, and a slew of fresh content. But not all is smooth sailing in the world of Hunters. A key feature, Fortnite’s beloved “Ready Up” button has hit a technical snag, forcing players to take the long way back to matches and frustrating squad-based teams.

Here’s what’s happening and how Epic Games is addressing the situation.

For years, Fortnite’s Ready Up button has been a go-to for players eager to skip the lobby and jump straight into their next match. However, with the launch of Chapter 6, the feature suddenly stopped working. Players now have to return to the main lobby after each game to queue up again, disrupting the seamless gameplay loop.

Epic Games confirmed the issue, posting on social media:

“Hey! The ‘Ready Up’ button at the end of the match is temporarily disabled as our team is working on an issue.”

Not only has the button been rendered non-functional, but Epic has also removed it altogether while the problem is being investigated.

What Is Epic Doing About It?

Epic hasn’t left players entirely in the dark. They’ve shared updates through a dedicated Trello board, where the bug is marked as “In Development.” Though no timeline has been provided, it’s clear the studio is working diligently to restore the feature. Speculation suggests a fix could arrive as soon as December 6, based on the turnaround time for similar issues in the past.

If not resolved by then, the Winterfest update, expected on December 10 might serve as a natural milestone to bring the button back.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 x Squid Game

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 just took the battle royale experience to a new level, introducing a Squid Game inspired mode! Imagine you're standing still, every muscle tense, in a field that’s eerily quiet except for the ominous chant of “Red Light, Green Light.” One wrong move, and it’s game over, literally.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has brought the Squid Game experience to life, and it’s as intense as you’d expect. But this isn’t just a walk down memory lane for Squid Game fans. The iconic childhood games are now reimagined with Black Ops’ signature tactical edge.

The stakes are virtual, but the adrenaline? 100% real. This is where the intensity of Black Ops meets the psychological pressure of Squid Game, and trust me, your nerve will be tested at every turn.

Could this be one of this years most talked about crossovers?

PlayStation Celebrates 30 Years of Play Tomorrow

On December 3, 2024, PlayStation marks its 30th anniversary, celebrating three decades since the original console's debut in 1994. To commemorate this milestone, Sony has unveiled a limited-edition 30th Anniversary Collection, featuring PS5 consoles and accessories adorned with design elements reminiscent of the original PlayStation's iconic aesthetic.

In addition to the hardware releases, Sony Interactive Entertainment has organized various events and promotions to engage the gaming community. These include free multiplayer weekends, special tournaments for titles like NBA 2K25, Tekken 8, and Guilty Gear Strive, as well as the release of classic PlayStation game soundtracks on digital platforms.

Marvel Rivals Global Launch Countdown

The wait is almost over! Marvel Rivals, the highly anticipated 6v6 competitive hero shooter from NetEase Games and Marvel Entertainment, is set to launch on December 6, 2024. This free-to-play game, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, promises to redefine the Marvel gaming universe with its blend of fast-paced action and iconic characters.

An Impressive Lineup of Heroes

At launch, Marvel Rivals will feature an expansive roster of 33 characters pulled from the Marvel multiverse. Fan favorites like Wolverine, Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Iron Man stand shoulder-to-shoulder with unique inclusions like Squirrel Girl, Jeff the Land Shark, and Cloak and Dagger. Each character brings their own distinctive abilities and playstyles, categorized into Duelist, Strategist, and Vanguard roles.

Wolverine’s addition has stirred excitement, especially after the character’s resurgence in the popular Deadpool & Wolverine film and X-Men '97 series. Fans are already speculating about post-launch heroes, with Deadpool being a prime contender to join this epic roster in the future.
