Gaming industry in august:

August was quite a challenging month for us, mainly for our character team, as we have prepared over 12 full characters for one big project. Currently we are working on several other projects, but we would be open to start any kind of discussion about your project, so please do not hesitate and reach-out to me. We have some free availability in our props/environment team. We wish you great start of your autumn and a lot of success.

Ensuring the Game Graphics Fits the Concept

Fitting the game graphics into the overall concept might not be as straightforward as it sounds. The most improtant thing is to hand out a bulletproof project brief, send relevant references, and of course communication.?What else is needed? Read on to find out!

TOP Five August News

  • Sony announced that its PlayStation Portal streaming handheld will launch on November 15. Unlike PlayStation Vita or Nintendo Switch, the device doesn’t work without a PlayStation 5, thus no games are run directly from the handheld itself. Instead, the entire PS5 system is streamed into the device, which then lets you play the games as if you were on the console itself.
  • Konami announced Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 will run at 1080p/60 FPS on all platforms except for Nintendo Switch which runs at 720p/30FPS while 1080p/30FPS docked. For many, this news came as a disappointment. While the collection includes plenty of bonus content, it is otherwise a fairly straightforward port of the original Metal Gear Solid HD Collection from 2012, without 4K resolution.
  • Ubisoft has cancelled its Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel. It was in development at Ubisoft Quebec, but the company’s leadership decided to cancel in early July. Jeff Grubb stated that the intentions with it was to grow Immortals into a franchise to explore different mythologies in future games, such as Hawaiian Polynesian myths.
  • The upcoming Soulslike action RPG Lords of the Fallen will have two resolution modes on consoles, the game developer Hexworks confirmed. It will run at 1440p/30FPS quality mode or at upscaled 1080p/60FPS performance mode, meaning it will not feature 4K mode as other games usually do. Hexworks who also informed the gaming world that the game will take 25 to 30 hours to complete.
  • Sony has started testing beta-testing 4K cloud gaming for the PlayStation 5. At the moment, it’s unclear if Sony’s 4K refers to the rendering resolution or the streaming resolution. The company is yet to comment on the possibility of extending these cloud gaming capabilities to the PlayStation portal streaming device will release in November.

Statistics and Chart of the Month

Nintendo did not have the best financial results in the WiiU era. But as you can see, once the Switch came out, it changed. In comparison with 2012, when the Wii U was released, The Switch’s launch saw an almost 30 % increase in annual net sales. And it grew steadily until 2021, unlike in the WiiU times.

The chart below shows the top console game genres in 2023. As you can see, the number one choice of PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo owners are adventure games, followed by Battle Royale and Sports.

Quote of the Month

Mario has been among the most popular Nintendo characters for decades, so naturally, there has been many console bundles with him. “There are only three certainties in life: Death, Taxes, and A Nintendo Switch bundle with Mario Kart 8 for the holidays,” Daniel Ahmad on Nintendo always doing shenanigans with Mario Kart.
