Here is what happened in the gaming industry across the Americas in the past week:
New York mobile sports wagering handle hits $1.43bn in August
Figures released by the New York Gaming Commission have revealed that players in the state wagered a total of $1.43bn on sports in August 2024, up 25% year-over-year from the $1.11bn registered in August 2023. In addition, gross gaming revenue (GGR) generated by players in the state totaled $125m in the month of August – up 24% year-over-year from the $98m generated in August last year. This latest figure brings the total GGR figure in the state of New York so far up to $786.3m. Ohio senator proposes iGaming legislation
The Buckeye state could be one step closer to welcoming a legal iGaming market. Ohio Senator Niraj Antani has introduced a bill that would expand statewide gambling from racino and brick-and-mortar locations to the internet, according to a WKEF local report. Players around the state have had access to a regulated sports betting market since January 2023. Antani released a statement to local news, outlining why he believes a regulated iGaming market could be in the best interest of Ohio residents. Read the full article here.

Massachusetts study shows illegal sports betting levels remain unchanged
The University of Massachusetts has released a recent study that examines the impact legal sports wagering has had on illegal gaming revenue, according to a local WWLP news report. Research revealed that legal sports betting statewide has not made significant changes to illegal gambling activity. The UMass School of Public Health and Health Sciences looked at data from both 2022 and 2023. The study showed that “there was no change in the proportion of monthly gamblers who engaged in illegal sports betting between the two years.” Read the full article here.
