Saga used Gamescom as its platform to unveil a line-up of new indie blockchain games under the ‘Saga Origins’ banner. In short, the games are designed to leverage blockchain tech for enhanced gameplay experiences. We think the announcement highlights a growing trend of indie developers embracing blockchain for game dev, focusing on decentralised economies and player ownership of in-game assets. DarkTimes, described as a medieval brawler royale, is another new title to embrace ownership of in-game assets. The game blends traditional battle royale mechanics with medieval combat, aiming to create a unique experience within the Web3 space. DarkTimes is set to engage the games community with a 20-day social campaign titled Rune Run, beginning on August 30, 2024. Cointrust has more details .
To funding now. Gameplay Galaxy has raised $24 million in seed capital to create what it’s calling ‘the world’s first Web3 competitive gaming ecosystem’. The funding was led by Framework Ventures and Animoca Brands . The platform says it aims to revolutionise competitive gaming by integrating blockchain tech, allowing players to own, trade, and monetize in-game assets. Staying with finance and Animoca: its mobile games unit GAMEE has secured undisclosed funding from Pantera Capital for its Telegram and TON-based app, WatBird. This follows previous investment from TON Ventures . Launched earlier in 2024, WatBird has amassed over 2 million subscribers. Co-founder Bozena Rezab stated that the funding will enhance the integration of web3 features into Gamee's services, engaging their community of 90 million gamers within the TON ecosystem. And finally, one to keep an eye on. Veteran Britsoft developer Peter Molyneux appeared on stage during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live to deliver the teaser trailer for his studio 22cans ’ latest PC title, Masters of Albion. The fantasy world building game bears some similarity to the studio’s Web3 title Legacy, which leverages a gameplay mechanic that sees players buy plots of land in the form of NFTs. Right now, there’s no mention of Web3 functionality within Master of Albion, but we wonder if some of Legacy’s learnings will be carried over by the time it launches… More here .
