Games Night or Group Study? Teaching E.R management with board games
How It's Med
With our podcast network, we unravel the stories, skills and secrets of the individuals shaping the future of healthcare
?? Move over, Monopoly! **GridLockED ??, **an E.R themed board game **along the lines of OverCooked!, is here to stay…and to teach medicine?
Now you might ask “Why are doctors worrying about board games?”, and it’s a fair question, one we had too, before talking to Dr. Teresa Chan , Associate Dean at 加拿大麦克马斯特大学 , in an episode of How It's Med .
If you’ve binge watched medical TV shows, you might know that managing multiple patients in an E.R can be tough. And that’s just about the understatement of the year. Triaging, prioritising, and managing resources - these are just some of the skills healthcare professionals need to tap into in order to manage emergencies successfully.
That’s where the game comes in. It’s a simulation that students can go through and understand “how things work”. They have the option to work together and put their skills to the test in a low-stakes environment. This is a novel way to keep students engaged throughout the learning process, and to make sure that they are well-primed before managing the arduous balancing act that emergency medicine can be.
If you think that’s cool, we have more in store for you! We are constantly on the look-out for innovations in healthcare and we’ve talked to some of the most successful healthcare innovators on our podcasts series.
You can also check out the other work that Dr. Chan has developed after her thesis. Beyond winning the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians (CAEP) Top Innovation Award in 2017 with GridLockED, she has helped build sequels to the game, primed our future emergency doctors for academic emergency medicine with AliEM, and so much more!
