Games Based Learning

Games Based Learning

Learning in its true sense is about being able to understand the concept, actively experiment with it and modify it to suit individual needs as against learning by rote.

In our experience, active experimentation, through games and simulations can help engage the learner into understanding the construct and practice the newly acquired skill.

A few benefits of well-designed learning games are:

1.   Active engagement: Games / simulations engage the learner and move her from a passive observer to an active participant role. Unlike traditional lectures or seminars, participants get actively involved in the learning process and are contributors to it.

2.   Learning by experience and adapting: Traditional methods do not offer, “try, fail, learn” experiences. With games based learning, learners develop two essential skills; 1) reflection and 2) adaptability, which goes a long way in the real work application.

3.   Self-paced.

In most traditional learning, session pace is set by the person imparting it. In games based learning, participants tweak the pace of the game to match their temperament, style and agility.

4.   Feedback.

If you do poorly on a traditional assessment, it may be days before you know how you fared however in games based learning / simulations, feedback is instant wherein the participants immediately get a “buzz” or “demerits” or lose points.

5.   Standardization.

When it comes to hands-on training, it’s extremely difficult to assess all learners in a standardized way. Subjectivity invariably creeps in. With simulated learning, the rules are applied equally to all participants, allowing for better learner-to-learner assessments.

6.   Cost-effective.

As opposed to organizing instructor-led or workshop-type learning, simulations are much more cost-effective and broadly distributable.

The session conducted by Sivasailam Thiagarajan reinforced the above stated beliefs as we were able to look at the content from a gamification perspective and how learning 'jolts' can be created to enhance participant engagement. Would also like to seek opinions of my fellow travellers in this journey. What would your thoughts be Mala Bali, Rohit Shenoy, Jayshree, Suraj Chaudhry, Sheena Narendranath Agarwal, Sunidhi Gupta, Mrinal Benipuri? How do you think the journey helped you and what would be your thoughts be for aforementioned article and the experience we had?
