Game Time

If you are like me, you’ve been shaking off your Holiday hangover, knee-deep in performance reviews and faced with developing your personal development plan (PDP). I have always enjoyed the emphasis to self-reflect on areas in which I can improve and focus on homing in on skills to advance knowledge in other areas. In fact, this year I’m excited to share my Playbook on how to develop your winning PDP.

First, it is essential to recognize your strengths and weaknesses and know your zone. Oftentimes change begins at the end of your comfort zone. Quoted by Joe Namath, “If you aren’t going all the way, why go at all?” A mediocre goal is boring, dull, and doesn’t create any value for anyone.

Second, be aware of blind sides and barriers – but do not be afraid to go beyond. Elements of your PDP may seem hopeless at times, but we are reminded of one of the most celebrated tennis players in history, and one of the 20th century's most respected women, Billie Jean King has dedicated her life to breaking barriers both on and off the tennis court. King leveraged her position to threaten a boycott of the 1973 U.S. Open if pay inequality was not addressed.  Commit yourself to strive to be the best version of yourself each day. By doing so, you can embrace your champion mentality.

Lastly, hold yourself accountable and crush those goals. You must rely on your work ethic to get ahead. Because it is never about the talent or cognitive skills, it is about the non-cognitive skills such as discipline, courage, vision, and grit. If you want to be in the top 5%, be willing to work like the top 5%.

I find it helpful to share with family and friends what you are striving to accomplish so they can celebrate when you achieve your goals. Plus, be sure you publish your certifications and achievements because your hard work is deserved of this recognition.

As you finalize and focus on your PDP remember this advice from my favorite childhood sport star, Michael Jordan “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.”

Go…you’re on deck to make it happen.
