Game of Thrones Season 8: Now My Watch Has Ended

Game of thrones is based on the storylines of A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of novels written by George RR. Martin. It is a HBO produced TV series that has gained enormous popularity and high rating than any other show ever. The story of GoT is based on the characters of 7 Kingdoms, some who mainly want to conquer one thing, ‘The Throne’, while others seek independence from it. The complexity of dynastic struggles, battles, alliances, politics, and relationships is what that keeps on adding the spice in interesting plotlines.

GoT announced its 8th season to be the series finale in 2017. Where its highly anticipated season 8 release date was set in April 2019. There were many fan theories that were circulating through the internet between the 2 years break. From character development to new plotlines, everything was possible and yet unpredictable because of the wicked story telling style.

As season 8th aired, all the theories that were derived from the original novel of George RR. Martin went ambiguous. From uneven and incomplete closures to distorted mapping and poor writing, GoT season 8 lost its rating and failed to impress it audience. The most interesting storylines that were anticipated by the audience but abandoned by the writers are:

1.      Jon Snow’s Heritage:

It has always been foreshadowed that Jon Snow was the chosen one. From being honourable Eddard Stark’s bastard son to being the Lord Commander of Night’s Watch, being the first northerner to build alliance with the Wildlings and most importantly being the true heir of Targaryen’s heritage. Therefore, being the heir to the Iron Throne. However, the identity revelation in the series was not as grand as anticipated. Jon Snow’s heritage had no impact and therefore was not provided the right ending for his character as the audience deserved.

2.      Azor Ahai Prophecy

There was a prophecy mentioned in one of the books of G. RR Martin that during the Long Night, when Jon Snow and Night King will have a duel and it will get impossible for Jon to defeat the Night King with human capabilities. That’s when the Silver Haired Queen, Jon’s lover, would ask Jon to put his Valyrian Steel Sword through her heart, hence triggering an aggressive and fierce fire burning all over the blade. This was supposed to be the scenario and weapon that would help defeat the biggest villain in television history, The Night King.

3.      The Valonqar Prophecy

The Valonqar Prophecy stated that Cersei Lanninster would meet the fate of her death by the hands of her younger brother. However, the definition of ‘younger brother’ was debatable among the show lovers. As Cersei Lannister betrayed both her brothers, Tyrion Lannister was an obvious guess, therefore, making it a very easy, boring and predictable death of the most wicked, and glamourous villain of Game of Thrones. Fan theories, suggested that Jaime (Cersei’s twin) was born minutes later after Cersei, which qualifies him to fall in the category of ‘younger brother’ who would end her life. Fan’s wanted Cersei to die a brutal death, but that satisfaction was always taken away from the fans.

5. Faceless Man

Arya Stark trained to be a faceless man for a long time in Braavos, she lost her sight in the process, and killed many people off her list. Yet she quits her training after more than a season and heads toward her home Winterfell. The fans never understand even today that why the most loved character was wasted on such an incomplete plotline.

6. Daario Nahaaris's Absence

Daario Nahaaris was a loyal soldier in Daenerys’s army. He was her lover, who always did more than he was asked for her Queen. Yet the writers decided to end his story line in season 6, and making the rest of Daenerys’s army move forward towards Westeros without him. When both of the Queen’s dragons died in season 8, people were hoping that Daario would fly up with baby dragons from Meereen to King’s Landing. Helping his beloved Queen win the lost battle with the Lannister army.
